    BSOD when I try to launch games from Xbox app


    I have Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, but every time I try to run a game from the Xbox app I'm getting a blue screen of death. This issue is specific to games installed and run through the Xbox app. I can run Steam and other games on my system with no problems. Non-Xbox App games that are linked into the Xbox app work fine.

    Things we've done so far:

    1. Made sure Windows 11 is up-to-date.
    2. Updated the system board's BIOS.
    3. Updated all ASUS and Intel system drivers.
    4. Updated NVIDIA drivers to the latest.
    5. Started Windows without most third-party services and software with MSCONFIG.
    6. Used DDU to remove NVIDIA drivers.
    7. Xbox app:

      a. Repaired games in the Xbox app.

      b. Uninstalled games and reinstalled.

      c. Uninstalled and reinstalled the Xbox app.

      d. Installed new game, still get BSOD.
    8. Terminated, reset and repair Xbox gaming services.
    9. Uninstalled, reinstalled Xbox gaming services.
    10. Ensured system board has no overclocking (settings to default).
    11. Uninstalled a game from one SSD and installed it to another SSD.
    BSOD errors we've gotten:

    • KERNEL_MODE_HEAP_CORRUPTION
    • WORKER_MODE_INVALID - xvdd.sys
    • SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION - fltmgr.sys
    • PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA - ntoskrnl.exe
    • Other BSODs with ntoskrnl.exe and xvdd.sys

    I realised that I put the game folder exclusion into the wrong section of my anti-virus, and now it's working, no bsod.

    Thanks for your help!

    I just hope MS find a solution to this soon.

    I guess I'll just wait for a solution then. I feel great knowing I'm wasting my 1euro/month time for this.

    A bit of testing with apps that are used by most people might be useful in the future...

    Having all anti virus users unable to use your app seems a bit unwise.
    So you don't need to completely disable your AV app. Just exclude, from real-time scanning, the root folder of where you have got your Xbox games installed.

    I'm also having this problem. Only way of fixing is to uninstall my anti-virus (which I would prefer to use than Windows Defender)
    Have you tried just excluding your games folder from your AV app's protection? That might be all you have to do.

    As shared by the Internal Support Team, there is an update with the Gaming Services and that would be version 3.63.16003.0 should fix the BSOD issue. So, to resolve the issue for BSOD we would highly recommend you to do a restart to PC first and disable the antivirus then install the update of Gaming Services. Launching the games should not be a problem after this.



    However, there are known compatibility issue with antivirus that could cause games to crash upon launching. If the disabling of antivirus is not your preference, we would suggest you to try restarting the device and install the update for the gaming services. Then if issue persist with the game, please send a feedback to Team Xbox and contact the developer of the antivirus.
