Blocking a Xbox Friend’s chat

Hello, I run a YouTube channel and have been asked if I could be added as an Xbox Friend, however, due to personal privacy reasons, I’d like to know if there is a way to block chat whilst keeping the friend.

I'm AJ, an Independent Advisor for the Xbox Community.

Unfortunately, there is no way to block an Xbox friend's ability to message you and still keep that person in your friends list.

The only workaround for this is not adding someone back as a friend and setting your communication preferences to friends only. This way, you'd still appear in people's friend lists and they would still be able to message you, you just wouldn't receive the messages.

To do this:

- Go to https://account.xbox.com/Settings
- Sign in to your Microsoft Account.
- Select "Privacy"
- Scroll down to find "Others can communicate with voice, text, or invites"
- Select "Friends"

are they on each others friends list too, but also check the xbox family security sections for each account to make sure chat is not blocked in some way.

As for unwanted chat or contact:

You can set the online and privacy settings of your child's account to "Friends Only" or to "Block", so the kid can still play on the console, but will only be able to chat with known friends that are in his friend list and no one else, or he can't chat
at all, if that helps.
