“*blank* is online” notification from people not favourites

How about an option to only get online notifications for friends that are favourites?

With the issue your having you may still have the user as a favourite, so this led to pop ups when he/she is online, if you remove the user as a favourite from your list, you should no longer get Notifications when he/she is online.

Did 360 have favourited friends? I think that's a pretty good idea, you could turn on the friend online notifications for everyone or favourited friends only or then completely off.

They work for me. I have it set to favourites only and they work every time.

The SmartGlass beta doesn't display notifications when favourite friends come online though, even though I have it set to do so. I get notifications in it when someone sends me a message, so the notifications are working - just not for friends coming online.
It is a beta though, so maybe that's not working properly right now.

This is normally down to using the favourite feature on a friends profile. Open the guide, go to "people" tab and open your friends list. Select the profile of the gamer you want to stop the notification for and open it, select "change friendship" and either
change to just friend from favourite or remove.

You can also go into settings>preferences>notifications>Xbox notifications>friends & broadcasts and change what you want to have notified there.
