So I've been through the 2k support service, we've done memory checks, clean boots disk scans, run DISM and driver reinstalls.

The best we could determine from logs was it might be RADAR_PRE_LEAK related or normal function and a memory leak due to something else

    Basically steam....it's not my problem

    2k ....... we're beyond our support service

Seems like a bug but nobody feels responsible and the various online reports haven't offered a solution

Any thoughts on where to go as 2k said go to microsft but this obviously generic support and is being "outsourced" to the community (although obviously grateful for that input!)

    :)

    Bioshock 2 remastered (steam)

Hello all. I thought I'd post the email thread with 2k support

Essentially it is a Bioshock only problem (less with the 1 remastered version)......game freezes frequently and randomly. Once it happens in an area/save it keeps happening. There are periods of stability that last minutes/hours but it is pretty unplayable.

Audio continues, no black screen or blue screen but either needs task manager end process or crashes to desktop on its own.

Here's an abbreviated version of what 2k suggested and I tried

    Elkyn A., Feb 4, 2022, 11:50 PST:

    Hey Telsrap,

I appreciate your patience and your willingness to try the extensive steps I shared, too bad none of those did the trick.

Now, thanks for the LOG file, I went through it, and sadly we don't have any more steps to follow from here, I'd hate to bother you, but I'd have to recommend contacting the official Microsoft support over this page:

Would you mind giving it a try? I am sure the folks at Microsoft might have specific and more detailed troubleshooting options hat can help fixed your issue more efficiently.

    Yelsrap4, Feb 4, 2022, 11:11 PST:

    Thanks for the update.

I had an issue with Msconfig crashing explorer so it took even longer.

Long story short…….the very first time I ran the program after the graphics driver re-install on a clean boot with the same save from before it ran for several minutes before I quite, reset my startup programs and did a normal boot.

The problem then appeared the next time I ran it same save.

Tried again disabling all startup programs and on a clean boot but it is persistent and almost immediate as before.

If I didn’t mention there are periods when it would run for some time and allow significant progress but once the crash occurs it is difficult to get out of it.

I have tried on new run/different saves but it is not specific to a save file etc

Memory checker found no issues. Also attached is the requested log file.

    Thanks for any further suggestions

    Elkyn A., Feb 2, 2022, 15:12 PST:

After an in-depth analysis, we have identified RADAR_PRE_LEAK logs. "Radar" is a memory-leak detection technology from Microsoft. The "pre-leak" warning indicates that a process is handling its allocated memory in a way that poses a risk of creating a memory leak.

This may be caused, amongst other things, by faulty drivers or system files

In order to attempt a solution to your issue, we would like to suggest the following troubleshooting steps:

Please follow them in order and do not skip any steps. They are rather lengthy and require extra attention and vigilance in order to be performed successfully.

    Initial Troubleshooting Steps:

    • First, please start by downloading the installer for the latest driver version of your video card. This can be done through this link:
    • AMD
    • INTEL
    • NVIDIA
Note: We recommend that you place the installation file on your desktop for easier access later on in our troubleshooting steps.

    1. We would like for you to launch your computer in a Clean Boot.
    2. Now that your PC is running in this mode, you will need to open your Device Manager. Press the Start or Windows button and move your mouse cursor over "This PC".
    3. Right-click on it and select "Manage".
    4. In the newly opened window, select the "Device Manager" section and find your video card. It will be under the "Display Adapters" section.
    5. Right-click on it, go to Properties and select the “Drivers” tab.
    6. From there, select the Uninstall option. Windows will warn you that you are about to uninstall your driver, say “YES”.
    7. Reboot your computer if it doesn’t do it by itself (Mandatory)
    8. Let your Windows reinstall the basic video driver. (It can take a couple of minutes before Windows completes it)
    9. Do another Clean Boot (Mandatory)

      10. Now that we are in a Clean Boot mode again, run the System File Checker

      11. Re-run the System File Checker an additional 3 times (Mandatory)

      12. Alright, now you can go ahead and install the graphic card driver that you downloaded previously.

      13. Do one final Clean Boot (Mandatory)

      14. Launch the game
Hopefully, this resolves your issue! If that is not the case, there are two ways your computer may behave after performing these troubleshooting steps.

If the issue is still happening but is not identical to what you previously had, please send to us updated DxDiag and MSinfo files which reflect these changes. We will also ask you for your latest CBS.log file. This file is generated when you run the System File Checker and can be found in this folder:

    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\

If the issue remains unchanged, we do have some additional steps to take however if reaching this point it could symbolize that the issue is very deep routed within your computer. In this case we will have to exhaust all troubleshooting options that we at 2K Support are qualified to provide you.

Perform a Memory Check on your computer

    1. Hit the (Windows button + R) on your keyboard.
    2. In the command box, enter “mdsched.exe” (without quotes).
    3. Select “Restart now and check for problems” and let the computer restart.
    4. The tool will run as the computer restarts, this can take some time so please be patient.
    5. Windows will then reboot again and give its report.
If there are indeed errors reported, we then recommend that you please get in touch with Microsoft Support immediately and inform them of these issues with your copy of Windows.

If you've made it this far, sadly it means that we have reached the peak of our approved troubleshooting steps and that your issue is better off in the hands of a Certified Microsoft Technician (which we at 2K Support are not qualified as such). You can reach a Technician over at Microsoft Support.

Please let us know how the situation evolves and if Microsoft will be able to investigate the cause of your issue.

Should you ever have any additional 2K related questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact us at any point!

    Hey Yelsrap,

Thank you so much for giving it a try with the reinstallation, I'm sorry it didn't work this time,

For now, I'll send this ticket for review, please hang in there, we'll reach back to you as soon as we have news about this.

    Yelsrap4, Feb 2, 2022, 14:14 PST:

Not surprisingly…..immediately happens again from prior saves

    Elkyn A., Feb 1, 2022, 13:06 PST:

    Hello Yelsrap,

    Thanks for the follow up,

    I'm sorry to hear that the initial options I suggested, did not resolve the issue. In order to make sure that everything file in your game is syncing correctly, I’d now suggest performing a full reinstallation. To do so, please follow the steps below;

    1. In Steam, click the "Library" tab at the top of the screen.
    2. On the left-hand side of the screen there will be a listing of all the games tied to your Steam account. ...
    3. Right-click the game and select "Uninstall..."
    4. A confirmation box will pop up.
    5. Install the game again.
Should this not fix the issue, or if you have any further questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact us again.

    Yelsrap4, Feb 1, 2022, 12:42 PST:

    Thanks,
I’ve run the web Direct installer and confirms no newer version (DxSetup and vcredist are not present in the Bioshock 2 install folder or anywhere I can find, I have not installed on the boot drive and so my steam installs are not in the Program Files folder, the Bioshock folder is also just “BioShock 2 Remastered” not “_CommonResdist” so wasn’t sure which vc libraries would need resintalling manually or from another source.
Drivers are as up to date as they can be given the age of the hardware.

    Have attached the diagnostics files.

    Hello Yelsrap,

Thanks for the confirmation, I can certainly understand how experiencing this issue might be frustrating so I'll do my best to assist you however I can!

I will share quite some steps to follow, and I'll request some information as well, your willingness to work with me would be very appreciated.

Firstly, would you kindly please do each of the following, to ensure that the game and all its additionally required software is properly installed:

    1. Verifying Game Cache
      · Load Steam.
      · From the Library section, right-click on the game and select “Properties” from the menu.
      · Select the “Local files” tab and click the “Verify integrity of game cache” button.
      · Steam will match the local files to the cloud files, and fix any errors it encounters.
    2. Reinstalling DirectX
      · In the Steam installation folder of the game you’re having trouble with, there will typically be a DirectX setup package.
      · Example file path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\BioShock 2 Remastered_CommonRedist\DirectX\Jun2010
      · Find and run DXSETUP.exe
      · Reboot the computer (mandatory)
    3. Reinstalling Vcredist
      · Navigate to your game’s steam folder – there will typically be a Vcredist folder.
      · Example file path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\BioShock 2 Remastered_CommonRedist\vcredist\2012
      · Please use the 2012 folder and not the 2010 folder
      · Find and Run vcredist_x86.exe
      · Find and Run vcredist_x64.exe
      · Should the files already be installed, you will be prompted to either ‘uninstall’ or ‘repair’. Choose ‘repair’.
      · Reboot the computer (mandatory)
    4. Updating your Audio/Video Drivers
Most PC issues can be easily resolved by updating your Audio & Video Drivers. Here are a few links to help you with that.

    Audio Drivers

    Video Drivers

Most video card manufacturers allow you to download their card drivers directly from their websites. Here's a list where you can do that.

If the above steps don't resolve your issue, we will need a copy of your DXDiag and MSinfo files to perform a deeper investigation of your system specs. These are non-invasive text files that provide crucial information in diagnosing and investigating the issue occurring with your game and system.

This Support Article will show you how to access these files and attach them to your reply.

Lastly, please help us with a copy of your save file for testing on our end.

Once we receive the DxDiag and MSinfo files, we'll investigate your issue and update your ticket.

Should you have any further questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact us again.

    Welcome to Rapture!

I'm sorry to hear about your game crashing all of the sudden, I'll do my best to investigate and seek any solution that can fix this issue, for now, can you confirm if you are playing the remastered version of the game or the previous version?

    Steam bioshock 2 remastered version
Frequent in game crashes with no obvious cause, more frequent in some locations but almost unplayable.

    Hello,

Have you tried contacting Steam Support? In some Steam games, they may contain files in them that Steam may use to show achievements or to send game files to the Steam servers.

Personally, I would suggest contacting Steam support, if they don't fix your problem, feel free to let me know and I'll be happy to help further.

    Cheers,

Yes tried all that but everyones responsibility is making it nobodies!

Steam: contact 2k or do you want a refund

2K: tried what they can but fairly generic then try microsoft

Microsoft: <<shoulder shrug>> try the community! (For which any ideas gratefully received

Yes thanks I have had a look but there are too many thrid party executables than I am comfortable with and the "fixes" require all steps to be applied rather than a range of options to try.

The title says it all.....these are workarounds for what unfortunately is an unresolved issue with the product I suspect.
