Bad HDMI retimer (or retainer?) IC known problem

Did Microsoft ever accept responsibility or have litigation come about regarding the known problem of bad HDMI retimer ICs in the One X? The repair shop looked it over and said this was definitely the problem and that they can’t fix it.
My son is heartbroken that he took such good care of his Xbox one X that the repair shop said it looked like it had just come out of the box, but it suddenly stopped working. I’ve read they might fix it for $250?
It’s not worth $250 to fix a problem they know should be Microsoft’s responsibility, for half the cost of a new console, but it was a gift from his dad, who died suddenly, so the emotional attachment might be enough for me to pay that ridiculous amount to get it fixed anyway.

I'm really sorry to hear about this and for your loss of his Dad. So, the HDMI retimer chip on xbox one x can be purchased for 20 on amazon and multiple other places. The removal and replacement of the chip is actually not a complex process, it involves using a heat gun, and flux to remove, new chip on aligned with the little circle, and then ensure new chip aligned and placed by in with the use of the heat gun. It's a bit tricky to get at it, but anyone comfortable enough with taking their hand to something could do it. I got a quote here for 100 euro, in all honesty, I'm planning to do it myself though, so will let you know how it goes. Don't be disheartened, I'm certain you will get this fixed relatively low cost.

why pay Micro$oft $250 for a chip replacement that would cost no more than $40 with labour. and the chip can be replaced with one from a donor board.

most repair shops have a stock of old boards for this.

Here in the uk if its out of warranty and it fails, you can claim SOGA but you have to have an engineer report showing it is a manufacturing fault which means having a third party open the unit. if it is proven then Microsoft have to act. I know SOGA all to well as i also repair and investigate laptops for HP, Lenovo, Acer, Asus etc etc.

Well first and foremost you should've sent it in to ms

Opening up a console vioids it for repair from.ms period

It is an not currently supported console either the current 2 world crisises chip shortage and the pandemic makes getting anything new for anything old next to impossinle

i have seen alot about either the hdmi port going or the chip, the chip can actually be changed you just need to find a repair shop that does them.
