Technically if you have a physical copy of content you are allowed to make backups as long as you retain the original and the backup is only to be used in place of the original to preserve it. Problem you run into on the 360 is the tools needed to make a
backup have to circumvent the Digital Rights Management the 360 uses which is illegal. So no legal way backup your games.

Second thing is external USB storage has a limit of 16GB partitions so you could only install 1-2 games. You can't create multiple partitions beyond the first one as the 360 will ignore them and look for the first partition on the drive. That means 16GB
per device with a limit on how many USB ports your 360 has free.

While you legally may be able to create a back-up of your media you are legally not allowed to circumvent any copy protection on that media, in the UK least.

So creating back-ups here is a very grey area.

Well to answer the question without making a copy.

Install the game to your Hard drive as suggested.

However the best bet would be to look after the discs.

As for making backup copies, although i'm sure you could fine the proper places to find information about said things.

You would be doing something that could get you banned from Xbox live , as well as banning the Xbox as well.

I really don't suggest making backups , as these discs should last a good long time if looked after properly.

(I still have cd's that work just fine that are close to 15 years old that i use regularly.)

If you install the game on your HDD (Hard Drive), your Xbox only has to reconize the disc.

This is usefull when a disc is damaged or when it's a huge game that need much time to load.
