Ark Survival Basics

It's really good fun... once you're past the trial and error so here's some help for starting up.

Host your own non-dedicated Multi-Player server.

This will allow you to get to grips with the basics. You can make it completely private or leave it public. Your character's progress will save here if you quit and come back. If you go to someone else's server your you need to create a new character. Their
details should save but you will need to find that server again.

Pause the game and use the Options Screen to re-size the screen to fit your television. You need to see the information on the right hand side and bottom left.

In The Beginning

Punch trees with RT and RB to collect wood and thatch.

Move over small stones on the beach and press Y to pick these up.

After you've done this a while hold down B and select "Craftable Items". Make a Stone Pick Axe by double clicking the tool. Then come out of the menus, hold B and select "Inventory". Go to the Stone Pick Axe and equip it with RT.

It's a good idea to put this in the Items Hot Bar at the bottom of inventory.

Now mug some trees with the Stone Pick Axe and bully some big boulders until you have enough resources to build a Torch, Stone Axe and Stone Spear. Again put these 3 other items into your Hot Bar in the Inventory allowing you to quickly equip and unequip
items with the D pad.

By now your character should be hungry. Select your hands (by using the Dpad to select a tool, then push the same direction again and it's gone). Move up to plants and press Y and you will gather berries.

Gather a lot of berries.

Go into your inventory and....

DON'T EAT THE NARCO BERRIES

But eat all the other berries by squeezing RT.

Did I mention not to eat the Narco Berries? They will put you to sleep.

Now you are basically capable of keeping yourself alive.

In the Inventory Screen you level up by going to the bottom right and clicking on the skills with plus marks next to them. This shoots up your level and unlocks more items for you to craft. If you don't click on the plus marks... you won't level up. Take
it from the Caveman that was stuck on level 3 for a day.

Guide to creatures

If it's bigger than you it's probably gonna kill you.

If it's around your size it's probably gonna kill you.

If it's smaller than you and has a mate... it's probably gonna kill you.

Watch out for the small lizard that killed Newman in "Jurrassic Park". It will spit venom at you and eat you... but it can be killed with a spear.

Carp, Dodo birds, monkeys and those small flat sea creatures can all be killed and will yield both XP and resources.

Everything else is mean.

Brilliant game and I hope this mish mash of what to do at the beginning helps people to get into the fun stuff with less of a headache.

Accidentally deleted profile save data

Exactly what I did. Also you can tweak the yield ratios in the server settings, this sway you get more crops quicker. Also change the taming time down too, however I'm yet to tame anything.

Don't attempt to kill anything big near your first shack, you will die and the beast will then get his mates to ruin your house. When you have storage boxes in that get destroyed they only have a certain amount of time before they disappear.

You will die, alot, well I did. Therefore I suggest getting a shack built asap. Try to build the shack in a place you know and remember, because until you get a bed made you will just respawn randomly in the sector you choose. You'll then have to go around
searching for your shack which is a pain.

In the shack get some storage sorted. Once you get some storage you wanna stock pile the rudimentary weapons Az mentioned above. As you will die, then respawn with nothing, then have to beat trees etc'. Having it all on tap on respawn saves time and effort.

Build a campfire next to your shack. You'll want to cook meat here. Also keep it stockpiled with wood, you can use it as a storage point. Also when you go out walking at night light it. If you don't and get lost it's a nightmare, even with the torch.

Don't really worry about stockpiling berries, they will spoil quite quickly anyway, plus there's loads about. When you're ready to tame your first dino start stockpiling. I've just got my first saddle blueprint at level 10. I now need to find the dino. Make
a wooden club to beat the dino with, knock him out then feed him narco berries and all other berries to keep him alive whilst the time goes down. Don't pick a carnivore yet as you won't have enough meat.

Hides seems to be care for me as every dino is bigger and harder than me. Make sure you have at least 3/4 spears before you go and kill anything, unless it's a small fish, however most small creatures are pack animals so be careful.

I think in the long term it'll be good to get a tribe sorted on a proper dedicated server, once you know what you're doing. People can have different jobs, build better shacks, basically more of a community. I believe anyone trying to go solo, in the long
term will suffer.

It's a brilliant game so far.

The potential for the stuff you'll unlock as you progress is pretty impressive too.

I had a quick scroll down the massive list of craftable items and somewhere in the silly high levels is "Rocket Propelled Grenade"!

I'm still like a tourist wandering around ogling the different dinosaurs.

 

Do me a favour Az. Let me know your server name. I know 3/4 peeps can play on your non dedicated server but I'm not sure if the host has to be present, when you are present I know we need to remain within 150m of each other. Would be good if I could get
on, join your tribe and build *** together like Minecraft.

Is there a singleplayer element to this game?

 

Played the trial yesterday and it's not for me, the poor graphics made my eyes hurt if I'm being honest but there's also no tutorial explaining what to do.

Yes, the host has to be there if you're playing with your friends on a non-Dedicated Multiplayer server.

Brandiesel, you can play single player. I've not tried it in solo mode... but when you create your own non-dedicated Multiplayer server you're pretty much playing Single Player until you get a friend to join.

When you step out of your personal non-dedicated multiplayer server time stops. Nothing else happens until you get back.

When you step out of a Dedicated Server then the world is persistent. It carries on even while you are away.

So your houses, your fires, your gear and your dinosaurs that you eventually tame... even your character themselves need to be left with some sort of provisions or they will die or could be destroyed.

You can put a pin code on your fire and house so that nobody else can go into it. Or share it only with your tribe. That's kind of clever and ensures people cant' grief you while you are away.

Absolutely brilliant game. The graphics are awesome. There's a choppiness at times but it's a Preview Game not the finished product so I can live with it looking better than "Fallout 4" even if it isn't always as consistent with frame rate when you get
into a fight.

Playing by yourself is fun but eventually you will want to get people together and try and tackle bigger prey and larger dinosaurs.

 

Looking better than Fallout 4 lol. You are a funny troll Az, but glad you're enjoying the game, as I said though, not for me.

 

is anyone having troubles killing animals in ark survival for xbox one? I cant seem to kill anything except with my dinos
