    I haven’t enrolled into a Preview since it crashed my External HDD in 2016

    New Xbox one updates.

    Hi!

    Some (latest) dashboard updates are dedicated for Xbox Insider users. You'll have to wait for the necessary period (for tests) to be able to receive these updates. Your friend is likely to participate in the program and have specific updates for his ring.

    The only way to get in is having a friend of yours that's in the program invite you through the preview dashboard app. Once you are sent the invite you are still placed in a queue of people to get in as they stopped openly accepting people last fall before
    the NXOE preview and haven't started to add many more people since.

    Are you in the insiders program to get new dashboard builds before others? If you want to stop these frequent updates you can un-enroll from the preview program through the preview app.

    Also, you could turn the option off for automatic updates in the power settings but you will still need the latest update to play online multiplayer.
