M3tal Daz3, i really appreciate your response. But turning off the controller is not my issue and i understand that there is no support or options
from Microsoft Xbox or Windows to resolve my issue. I do hope that in the future this will be fixed.

Currently my controller when plugged into my pc will install the drivers and automatically map the buttons.

The controller can be used in games that normally dont support external controllers but i also found that it will work for minor functions in the Edge web browser.

Im having trouble with the way these buttons were automatically mapped because there is no way to un-map or customize the buttons to keystrokes. I've only come across Xbox Accessories software to swap the buttons around.

This is a problem because i can just use 3rd party software to map the controller the way i want, but the defaulted mapped profile that was automatically set up will interfere with the custom map profile i set up. This makes all mapping software completely
unusable because of the default mapped buttons

There are no xbox controllers i can use and no 3rd party software i can use where normally i could.

I am specifically asking for anyones experience with a workaround for this issue. My only option right now might be to roll back my updates to before the xbox controller support. Where or how far that might be, i have no idea?

If anyone has any suggestion other than that, i would greatly appreciate it. This is a hackathon, i am not looking for ethical or straight forward settings because i know there are none.

Thank you for keeping us updated. As Jurgen1488 stated, there is no option to select done or apply. The

button map settings should be saving after you exit the screen. The console should be asking you to sign in, unless you are already signed in, and create a button map profile name. The article we provided explains how to set this up. If your button map
settings are not saving, we suggest
power cycling the console by holding down the power button for ten seconds. Be sure to let us know the results!

Usually when a custom profile is not being set to the desired slot location, which on a standard controller there is only 1 slot, it means that there was no change to the custom profile from the default profile that is set to profile 1, so if it recognizes
no changes were made, it will keep the same profile it has on there since it technically is the same profile.

First delete any extra profiles that were created from your troubleshooting. You should be able to edit the default profile without it creating a new custom profile. I have an elite controller and have edited the default profile to make a custom one and
it no longer appears in the list of profiles. There's a setting to restore to defaults so a default profile is not necessarily needed to stay on there.

I recommend to perform a complete hard reset and
power cycle. After the Xbox reboots, make sure you button map your desired set of buttons and make sure they are different than the normal button mapping. Keep in mind A and B needs to be mapped somewhere for a profile to be created.

Let us know if it's still not setting your custom profile to slot 1.

Yes it's a shame we can't map all the extra buttons we get on a racing wheel when using it on consoles. I think the reason for this is due to the xbox controller only having a certain number of buttons hence why you can't map any of the extra buttons as
there are only so many axis/button inputs that will be recognised between controller and console.

There are games that allow you to use a keyboard that can be used as a 'Button Box' mod so you can map more buttons to functions (racing simulation games like Project CARS 2 offers plenty of options for button mapping and controller customization). I do realise
this is not the same as being able to map the extra buttons on a racing wheel but is still handy for this very reason. Here is an example of one clever way to map extra buttons without using a full qwerty keyboard:

Hopefully there will be some updates and changes to how we can have our racing wheels recognised by the console and be able to map all the buttons properly. Until then, the link to the example I posted above might be a temporary solution to the button mapping
issue.
