Any Xbox Game Pass Game Installed will not launch - Errors out on a '16 bit' application

The error message “Launcher.exe cannot start or run due to incompatibility with 64-bit Windows compatible version is available” usually occurs when you try to install or open a program that is not compatible with 64-bit versions of Windows.



You can try right-clicking the setup file and selecting “Properties”. Then, click on the “Compatibility” tab and select the operating system that the program is supposed to be run on from the drop-down menu.



If the program is really old and is a 16-bit application, it cannot be run under Windows 64-bit. You can try finding a 32-bit version of the program you’re trying to install. Otherwise, you’ll have to run the program within a virtual system or an emulator like DOSBOX.

More about DOSBox. It is an emulator program that emulates an IBM PC compatible computer running a DOS operating system. It is used primarily to run older video games that were made specifically for the MS-DOS operating system.



DOSBox is available for download for free and can help you easily run almost any of your old favorite games. It is also configured to either a set of command-line arguments or plain text configuration files. For ease of use, it offers several graphical front-ends that have been developed by its user community.

Have you tried SFC/scannow as what Obsessive Power suggested on his July 7, post reply? If still the issue persists, kindly provide more information about it so we could provide accurate resolution.

1. One possible reason is the lack of admin privileges. You can open the game launcher with admin rights to fix the issue. Right-click on the launcher and choose Properties.
   
2. Another possible reason is that game files associated with the particular game are damaged, broken, or missing. In this case, you can try verifying the integrity of game files in Steam.
   

If none of these solutions work, you can try updating your graphics drivers or checking for Windows updates.

If you encounter a 16-bit application error message for games or apps that are actually designed for 64-bit systems, it could indicate a different underlying issue.

The above comments come from the fact that if you do a general internet search of such an error, you'll get articles and forum posts of users encountering this problem while actually attempting run old 16 bit games and software on modern 64 bit versions of Windows 10 or 11, not while running 64 bit apps on a modern 64 bit Windows 10/11 PC.

DOSBox is a PC emulator, but, it has no relation to this issue at all.

Have you run the system file checker utility in Windows? Open the Command Prompt as an administrator and enter the command sfc /scannow to scan and repair system files.

Can you provide some more information on your system specs please?

I suspect either some key system files are damaged/corrupt/out of date. Or, some background third party app is interfering with the Xbox app, such as an anti-virus or other security program. Unlike games from Steam, GoG or EA, to name a few, Xbox game installs are locked and encrypted. Something in Windows or running in the background may be making Windows think these games are 16 bit applications.

Bear in mind that there a myriad of PC hardware configurations with many different software and hardware setups. Without perhaps doing such a drastic step of completely formatting your PC and installing a fresh version Windows, it may not be possible to fix on its own.

Reinstalling the Operating system (and I mean booting from a bootable USB drive with a new fresh install of Windows 10 or 11) is what I am referring to here, not attempting to reset Windows from within the OS.

So, you're saying that Halo Infinite, Forza 5, Warhammer 40k Darktide, and High on Life are 16 bit apps that need a dosbox, not that something is borked with the xbox app?

Or are you saying you're just a bot account that posts this every time in the last two years someone has had this experience, because that's what search engines fine, you offering this useless suggestion to people with the xbox app installing games broken.
