Any advice on how to recover an Xbox account? It wants to send verification to a phone...

Sorry to hear about what happened. This is clearly not the situation I want you to be in. Just to set your expectation, due to our account safety and security, only us the account owners have the ability to recover our accounts and verify their ownership. Even a Microsoft Support cannot recover our accounts on our behalf because they're protected by the security information we have setup on our accounts which we only have access to.

If you no longer have access to your account security information, you will have to select "I don't have any of these" and it may redirect you to the account recovery form here https://account.live.com/acsr. Please fill out the information being asked there as accurate as possible for you to get back access to your account. If you still know your account password, it may only ask you to add a new security information which will be updated after 30 days.

If you have 2-step verification enabled, you won't be able to recover the account this way. Sadly, if you can't access any of the security methods on the account (email address or phone number), then it won't be possible to recover your account.

Two step verification.

This is where if you sign into your account somewhere or like try and change your password not only will it require you to enter your password but it will want to send a verification code to an email or text a code to a phone number that you have on the
account.

Go to the Microsoft account recovery page: Recover Microsoft Account.
Select FORGOT MY PASSWORD and click NEXT

Then you must Enter the email address of the Microsoft account you want to recover.

and then Microsoft will guide you through several steps to verify that you are the account owner. This may include sending a verification code to your associated phone number or a recovery email address.

then you must choose between ;
Recover Via Phone Number.
Recover via Recovery Email.

and once the entire process is completed you should have access to your Outlook account

If you contacted Xbox support and gave them the codes for security purposes without verifying ownership of the accounts that were brought up with the code they would not be able to tell you who redeemed the codes.

How Xbox support verifies ownership of accounts is this.

When they bring up an account the only option it gives them is to hit a button that sends out a 6 digit verification code to ANY email and/or phone number on the account (it does not show them the email or phone number it is being sent to) If you receive
the code at any phone number/email then give it to them they will then be able to get into the account and see what email and gamer tag is attached to that account otherwise they can not see any information on the account till that verification is done.

This is the ONLY way that you will be able to find out what account the xbox gift card money was put on to.
