another gamertag question (uugghhhh ikr)

a while back I decided to change my gamertag and it let me do it for free (my first was generated) and I saw the numbers behind it and thought "oh ok.....it wouldn't show up behind my actual tag in-game" yet as we all know it inevitably did. I was wondering
if there is anything I can do to change it to a preferred gamertag which is currently available (hopefully it stays that way) without paying 10$ or get someone to put a warning so the same thing doesn't happen to other people.

Smwutches, with the new
Gamertag update, you only receive one chance to change your Gamertag. Additionally, you will receive a Gamertag with numbers at the end of it, only if the Gamertag is currently in use by someone else.

There is no way to get another free change.

The system is set up to show you what your gamertag will look like with the numbers when you change it.

Probably that GT is still being used in some Microsoft server, could be linked to a old MSN Gaming zone, try to spell it different, changing letters with numbers for example
