I've heard of that too, I don't know if it's true.

If you want you can log into your account and delete the console from your account, doing so your account will not be linked at all.

To do this simply click on this link and remove the console from your account.

Xbox support couldn't help. I restored factory settings. After redownloading everything my account resynced with all the saves in the cloud so I could carry on my progress.

Although it's recommended to factory reset the console before sending it off sometimes you're not able to. Don't worry though as Xbox does factory reset all consoles after having them refurbished.
