Ability to grab the Gamertag of an old inactive account

If an account is inactive for five years the gamertag is then released back into the back for anyone to grab.

I don't agree with deleting inactive gamertag's that haven't been used in a while, but if you change your gamertag then the old one should be up for grabs instead of being put in limbo for an unspecified period of time.

Now that I'm looking at it on xboxgamertag.com, i do see a few games that i didn't play. So maybe it was hacked and i didn't know it! lol.

Is it possible Microsoft purged your gamertag for inactivity, and someone created a new gamertag, spelled identically to your old one? While there have been periodic mass purges of millions of inactive accounts, in 2016, Microsoft set a requirement of logging

If so, your old gamertag might be up for grabs if you wait long enough.

meanwhile accounts are deleted after some years of inactivity.

You can search your old Gamertag and see if it still exists or maybe someone else is using your old Gamertag now.

If you search your gamertag, does that show your old account or is someone else now using your old gt ?

The problem is, that inactive accounts are deleted after some years !

So if it is not your old account it is gone...
