Ask your friend to sign in to https://account.microsoft.com/billing/orders and check if he can see the game transaction showing as "completed", also if he is on PC he should see "Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC" because that's the correct license.

Once confirmed, ask your friend to click his profile icon on the top right corner of the page (https://account.microsoft.com/billing/orders) then copy or take note of the Microsoft email address that your friend will see (make sure that it's correct, especially the domain but do not share it with anyone for his security and privacy). Once your friend has it, sign out on his Xbox App, Minecraft launcher and Microsoft Store App then sign back in using the Microsoft email address that he copied.
