A cool workaround

I never got the second "part" of the quest because I never got the court mage arrested. I already knew who the murderer was because I'd picked his chest and found his journals before the quest ever started. I don't remember exactly what I did now, but it
seems like I went and talked to the mage instead of reporting him then followed the path that lead to the real bad guy.

OMG... I have 4 character saves and never even knew there was a 2nd part to that quest. I'm not much of a fan of Windhelm, so it never really bothered me much that I didn't get the option to buy a house. WH just seems to be a twisted, confusing place to navigate.
I never really explored it enough to find the house you're talking about. You have me curious about it now though if it's that nice. Is there anything I need to do in order to get the 'second part' of that quest to start? I got the court wizard locked up and
thought that was it.

This definitely is one of, if not the most confusing quests in the game. Although I never had any trouble finding the lady that is eluding some people.
