7.1 and 5.1 LPCM Audio issues with Series X: No center channel, missing surround

After hours of troubleshooting and going back and forth with Nakamichi (manufacturer of soundbar), we finally nailed down what "my" problem is (and from searching, sounds like other folks are having similar issues, even with different A/V hardware. Note that I'm going directly into the soundbar with the console.

Problem: Certain games lose center channel (Dirt5) and/or surround sound (all, including movie apps)

Reason: When running 5.1 or 7.1 audio mode (LPCM) on the console (We all know about the Bitstream audio delay issues, hence my efforts to get uncompressed working properly), found that the Series X changes to PCM (PCM what, I don't know) when you switch out to the dashboard, another game, or app. My soundbar is having issues switching from PCM to LPCM, even upon first bootup into the "PCM" dashboard. I can resolve the issue if I start the game (Dirt5, for example doesn't start throwing multi-channel surround sound until you start a race) and reboot my soundbar. Of course, the problem crops up again if I try to switch to another game or movie app. I'll see my soundbar go to PCM and once the game or app starts, it's stuck on PCM until I reboot the soundbar. Doesn't work when the game or movie is paused, so it has be outputting multi-channel audio. Not sure if this is a problem with some of our AV hardware or the way the series X is making the PCM --> LPCM switch.

    :)

    Low cut-scene dialog volume.

I figured it out! Audio settings for the Xbox and the TV/stereo/whatever you're getting sound through, need to be the same. If one is set on center channel, but you don't have a center channel speaker, it will sound muffled with low volume. If there is
no center speaker, they both need to be on Stereo instead of 5.1 or 7.1 surround.

    Xbox Dolby Digital support

Unbelievably, the xbox one currently does not support Dolby digital 5.1 or 7.1. There is a Beta setting for surround sound in settings but that doesn't work for me. I get no audio from my center channel. An update is supposedly coming. Thoroughly disappointed.

    Can't Hear Voices In-Game

Can I ask how you are listening to your audio, Jack? I ask because, depending on the company, the audio is handled in different ways. For example, some companies use the Center Channel on surround sound signals to put out the voices, so if the center channel
has gotten turned down (or if you've chosen the wrong output format in settings) then the game will be trying to play audio on a channel that you don't have hooked up. Say you're listening on a stereo set of headphones, or even just on your TV speakers. If
you set the audio to 5.1 surround, you'll hear SOME audio, because the right and left channels will just be a mix of the different right and left surround channels. But since there is no center channel on a stereo setup, the system will send audio to that
center channel, and your system won't be able to play it. (So, if the audio is directional, any time the voices should be coming from the center speaker, you wouldn't be able to hear them very well.)

You might try setting your audio to Stereo instead of 5.1 or 7.1? It might not be the problem in your case, but it is a possibility worth checking!

DTS reverting back to Uncompressed 7.1

I have a Murantz sr6003 and I'm fairly certain DTS Digital Surround is the best audio quality you can get and I have the same issue reverting back to uncompressed 7.1 kind of annoying because I only have 5.1 channels and at 7.1 you loose audio.

Seriously MS please fix the surround sound issue on the Xbox One...very disappointed :(

5.1 gives you 2 front, 2 rear, 1 center, and sub. sides where introduced with 7.1

If i understand correctly, 5.1 surround is working correctly on your 7.1
