4K Atmos support for Xbox One Media Player

When trying to play 4k Atmos content via USB on the Xbox One S, the media player app either shows the video with no audio, or I get a black screen and the app crashes.

All content is in .mkv format.

It appears that the app struggles to handle 4k content and cannot decode atmos.

Netflix 4k atmos movies work fine as I have set up the dolby app and tested everything, so I know my setup is correct.

I have tested EVERY media player in the app store and "MediaBox", works the best, but doesnt decode atmos content. The developer, ADN Software is also not responding to my emails with regards to atmos support.

I do believe that given that the Xbox has a Dolby Atmos setting, the media app should be compatible with 4k atmos, but it's not. It makes absolutely no sense.

Will the media app be getting an upgrade to support 4k atmos and be able to support more codecs, and if so, when can we expect this?

There is very likely a container or codex compatibility issue.

The other possibility is usb2 devices?

There are also a bunch of bugs with Atmos on xbox - check out the subreddit if you want to hear more info - you will need to google xbox Atmos reddit.

The other option is to try a remux into mp4 container.

I don't understand why many people are not voicing concerns. Almost all 4K movies come with atmos or DTS-X. It's unacceptable Xbox one S which is marketed as a 4K player won't support these formats. Microsoft should fix this quickly.

I don't believe the XBOX One S supports 30Hz at 3840X2160. My 4k doesn't support 60Hz but does support 50Hz, 30Hz, and 24Hz and I can't get anything on the XBOX One to work in 4k, including setting the TV Resolution. YouTube will not offer the option to
play in 4k and Media Player provides a green screen when playing a 4k MP4. There is no 30Hz option that I see in the Advanced Video Settings.

Hello again, in media execution, the Xbox One S has support for Blu-ray media, and internal at 4k at 60 frames per second, while Xbox One fat does not support Blu-ray media in 4k, however, it has support for internal media (downloaded) in 4k, although limited to 30 frames per second, largely due to the 1.4 HMDI port of Xbox One fat, which was replaced by HDMI 2.0 on xbox one s, thus gaining in transmission speed.

It seems that your TV supports Audio Return Channel (ARC). However, on the TV's specification page I don't see if it supports Dolby Atmos through ARC.

If your TV is capable to send Dolby Atmos via ARC, you'd connect your Xbox to a 4K capable HDMI port OTHER than the HDMI ARC port on your TV.

You will then get 4K resolution on the TV screen, and the TV would "forward" audio via the Audio Return Channel to the sound bar. If supported, this will then be Dolby Atmos.

It seems that the Soundbar doesn't support 4K pass through. So either you would need a new TV that supports Dolby Atmos via ARC, or a new soundbar or AV receiver that supports 4K video.
