15 Character Gamer Tag

Decided to try and change my gamertag to but I noticed the character limit was 12 instead of 15. My current Gamertag is 13 characters and I've had it since I made the account in 2012. This Post from a year ago states that I should still have the 15 character limit for my name but on an Xbox Series X, PC, and Mobile App I still have a 12 character limit. I don't have access to an Xbox 360 anymore otherwise I would've just used that to get the 15 character limit, so any help would be appreciated.

If you don't have access to a 360, then you're limited to the 12 character limit. There is no way around that.

I have heard that if you change your gamer tag on a 360, you can still get 15 characters.

Sorry to hear that you are going through this with the gamer tag. Unfortunately you are not the only one that is going through the 15 character to 12 character transfer for gamer tags. But, unless it causes a technical error within the XBOX software, it's
doubtful that it wont be changed back anytime soon. It was obviously changed to 12 characters for a reason and anytime a gamer tag is set up, it's always a good idea to choose your gamer tag carefully, especially after you use up your 1 free change without
the added charge.

Are you sure it's not existent as one with a suffix without knowing the actual name

Keep in mind you have to know the exact context

It could be used as gamertag or gamer tag or Gamer TAg for all you know and yes they are all treated as the same name.

Keep in mind you are limited to 11 character's not 15 due to the gamertag system now with suffix

Thanks for reaching out here in Xbox Forums. I understand there is an issue with

changing a gamer tag. In reference to your question, No special symbols, punctuation or accented characters are allowed. It has to be 15 characters or less.
