    1440p @ 120Hz not working with my monitor on Xbox Series X


    I just received my Xbox Series X, but 1440p @ 120Hz is not working with my monitor. Under "TV & display options," I am able to set 1440p, 1080p, or 720p as my resolution, which is expected. However, under "4K TV details," it says, "Your TV setup doesn't support 120Hz. Games won't display at 120 FPS." My monitor is a Dell S3220DGF (1440p, 165Hz, FreeSync). Both HDMI inputs should work at 1440p @ 120Hz, and I am using the HDMI cable included with the console, but the monitor is still only outputting 1440p @ 60Hz, so I don't know what the problem is.

    I have gone through various troubleshooting steps including:

    • Changing the Xbox's resolution to 1080p and 720p to see if 120Hz would work at those resolutions (unsuccessful)
    • Turning variable refresh rate on and off on the Xbox (and turning FreeSync on and off in my monitor's settings) to see if 120Hz would work at with those settings (unsuccessful)
    • Changing the monitor input of the HDMI cable (unsuccessful)
    • Resetting and power cycling the Xbox (unsuccessful)
    • Checking my monitor's firmware to see if it is up to date (it is)
    I have also chatted with a Microsoft support agent, who said that the Xbox Series X can only run at 120Hz when outputting a 4K signal. Ex: 4K @ 120Hz should work, but 1440p @ 120Hz is impossible since the resolution is not 4K. I don't think this is true, which is why I haven't given up, and I am coming to the forums for help.

    I only bought the Series X for its 120Hz capabilities, so if 120Hz does not work on my monitor, I will unfortunately have to return the console.

    I appreciate any feedback or attempt to assist me, so thank you in advance.

    Until you don't proof me this specific monitor (Xiaomi Mi Curved 34) enables 1440p@120hz with Xbox Series X, your comment is meaningless.

    Yeah, there are some monitors with 1440p@120hz support for Xbox series s/x, that simply doesn't mean that ANY 1440p+ monitor with 120hz+ (especially 144hz+) can do it. Period.

    I've tried everything, that (1440p@120hz) simply doesn't work with that monitor. I've already listed every step I've tried, I'm not gonna write it again.

    Please read previous comments before posting the same dried comments...

    Does the series x support 1440p 144/155 refresh rate?

    The Xbox Series X will do 120Hz but no more, regardless of resolution or monitor.

    I would check to see if other Xbox Series X owners have confirmed to achieve 1440p120Hz on those monitors before purchasing.

    Maybe a google of "xbox series x 1440p 120hz ___________ " and insert the monitor model to see if people have posted about their monitor and Series X working.

    Xbox Series X. 1440p lies.

    Without display 1.4 support there is no reason to target 1440p at 120hz. Only screens are able to do this have 4k 120hz with HDMI2.1.

    Sorry you feel this way, but that is not true. There are compatibility issues with monitors and the Series X/S sure, but there are some monitors that can do 1440P 120Hz via HDMI 2.0 without issues.

    The Five listed here     from Rtings.com can all support 120Hz @ 1440P over HDMI 2.0.

    I have also seen on here that the Samsung G7 can also do 1440P @120Hz effortlessly.

    Just because your monitor doesn't work doesn't Microsoft were lying.

    Also there is a lot more to the Series X than just a fast SSD. It has a GPU at least twice as fast as the Xbox One X and a CPU 3x faster. The Series X also has Raytracing.

    I fixxed it by changing my monitor to fps mode and disable freesync premium on the monitor itself. Now I am at 1440p@120hz on xbox series x

If you have trouble getting 1440p 120hz on the Series X using the provided Microsoft hdmi cable, try switching it with the one that came with the monitor. At first I could not get 120hz using the provided hdmi cable that came with the Xbox, but switched it to the one that came with the monitor and the option for 1440p 120hz finally became selectable.

    As it has issues with ps5 and series x

    Odd it requires a hdmi 2.0 rather then a hdmi 2.1 cable
