Mythic Achievements are Great, but Legacy 100% Completions Are Still Broken

With Mythic Achievements coming, it’s time to fix broken & discontinued multiplayer achievements



Seeing Xbox finally put some love back into the achievement system with Mythic achievements is great. But while Mythics are a cool addition, for me—and plenty of other avid achievement hunters out there—nothing beats hitting a true, clean 100% completion.

The reality right now is that a massive chunk of our backward-compatible library—including Xbox’s own flagship first-party games—is permanently broken because of dead servers, empty matchmaking queues, and delisted DLC. If Xbox is serious about improving the achievement experience, now is the time to address this.


The Problem



Dead Matchmaking & First-Party Shutdowns: When the legacy 360 Halo servers were sunset in 2022, dozens of achievements across Halo 3, Halo 4, and Halo: Reach became impossible overnight because they require public matchmaking. Iconic achievements like Halo 3’s Two Corpses in One Grave or Reach’s You Blew It Up! are completely gone.

Ghost-Town Lobbies & Impossible Grinds: On games where servers are technically still on, the player bases are long gone. You cannot naturally unlock things like Gears of War’s Seriously... (10,000 ranked kills) or Gears 2’s Party Like It’s 1999 anymore. Even on active hubs like Halo: The Master Chief Collection, achievements like Rock and Coil Hit the Floor or Skunked are practically impossible because the specific ranked playlists you need are total ghost towns with infinite queue times.


The Solution: Follow the Mass Effect 3 Blueprint



BioWare figured out the answer to this over a decade ago. Mass Effect 3 gave players two paths to unlock multiplayer achievements: you could earn them online, OR you could unlock them through single-player campaign milestones (like completing offline N7 ops or beating the game on Insanity).

Nobody is asking for free handouts or auto-pops that devalue the Gamerscore. We just want a legitimate way to earn them:

Add Offline / Single-Player Alternatives: Patch first-party games so multiplayer achievements have campaign, bot, or Horde/Firefight equivalents. Let weapon kills or medal counts count in PvE or local play against AI.

Open Up Custom & Local Matches: Drop the strict "Public Ranked Matchmaking" requirements where possible so players can knock them out in private lobbies, LAN/system link, or local split-screen.

Handle Dead Servers Gracefully: If an old game genuinely can't be patched and the servers are gone forever, update the backend so discontinued online achievements don't count against your 100% completion stat.

The Reality: It’s Forcing Players to Cheese or Mod

Because these lists have been left broken for so long, players who care about completion are left with zero good options:

Cheesing & Boosting: Earning these achievements today doesn't take skill; it takes dragging out multiple consoles, setting up dummy accounts, and spending hours trying to match with yourself in dead playlists. It completely ruins the fun.

Profile Modding: When a server is shut down and the legit chance of getting the achievement is literally 0%, frustrated players end up looking at console mods, profile editors, and save injections just to flip the flag.

Having to resort to exploits, dead-lobby manipulation, or profile modding defeats the entire point of achievement hunting. I hate that players have to resort to those kinds of measures, and most hunters don't want to touch it. But Xbox has essentially left players with no other choice if they want to finish these games.


Xbox Should Lead on This


Xbox has always hung its hat on backward compatibility and game preservation. But leaving our most iconic first-party franchises stranded with broken, unfinishable lists goes against that entire philosophy. If we're updating the system for the future with Mythic achievements, we shouldn't leave the games that built the platform permanently broken in the past. Give us a fair, legitimate way to finish them.
