  1. Suggestion: Officially open Xbox One at end of support – drivers + alternative OS

    Hi everyone,

I’m writing to share a constructive suggestion regarding the eventual end-of-support phase for the Xbox One family of consoles.

When Microsoft eventually ends full software support for the Xbox One, it would be a game-changer if a final system update could:

Unlock or adapt the bootloader in a controlled way to allow booting alternative operating systems.

Open-source the necessary hardware drivers and related components so the hardware can run Linux, Android TV, or other systems smoothly.

This would give the massive installed base of Xbox One consoles a useful second life as media centers, emulation boxes, or lightweight daily computers, rather than turning millions of working devices into e-waste.

Why this would be a win for Microsoft and users:

Sustainability & Right to Repair: Positions Microsoft as a leader in reducing electronic waste.

Hardware Longevity: Preserves residual value and utility for hardware users already own.

Community Goodwill: Generates massive positive sentiment across the gaming and tech communities.

Consistency: Aligns well with Microsoft’s broader commitment to open-source software and sustainability goals.

An official, clean, and secure solution from Microsoft would be far better than leaving legacy hardware to unofficial workarounds or landfills.

    What do you all think?

    Xbox One Wired Controller Issue

Third party controllers are supported via compatible ID (even if the HW ID doesn't match the compatible ID will). IF you had already installed the drivers for your old controller, then the new controller will work with the old driver because of the compatible
ID match (it will show up as Xbox Gaming Device instead of Controller). However if you've recently reinstalled the OS or uninstalled the drivers then it may not.

Please use the official drivers from here: catalog.update.microsoft.com/.../Search.aspx. Open in IE, and make sure to choose the driver matching your chipset, x86 for 32bit, amd64 for 64)

If even then the driver does not automatically load on plugging the device, you can manually force the driver to load, by going to device manager, finding the controller node that is errored->Right Click->Update Driver->Browse local machine for driver. Then
    choose the correct one.

    computer specifications:

    Ryzen 2600, 16gb ram, gtx 1660ti
First of all I suggest you perform a full reboot, check if OS and drivers are updated and check if you are logged in with the right profile.

If it doesn't help, you should contact the official support from here:

Also, I did what the Official Staff directed to do and windows apparently is designed to keep the controller from starting even after forcing it to load:

"Third party controllers are supported via compatible ID (even if the HW ID doesn't match the compatible ID will). IF you had already installed the drivers for your old controller, then the new controller will work with the old driver because of the compatible

PC Xbox app & PS5 dualsense controller.

The ID name comes in the firmware, that is the wonderful thing about USB. It only needs a generic driver which already comes with the OS. Any OS with USB support will show it with the name, even if it has lost support many years before the device launch, like Windows 98 SE.

Steam support first came from the reverse engineering made in the linux front by the community since the device can be used without too much hassle on a computer, through the hid-sony driver. Just "recently", on christmas eve 2020 sony published an official linux driver the hid-playstation driver, which added support for both the dualsense and the dualshock4, so that's where valve got the info from sony.

The DualShock3 only can be fully used on windows with custom drivers, while native on OS X >=10.7 (dont know the details about this, but it might have been an integration from the code from the BSD kernel into XNU), or linux in >=3.15 kernel
