As a side note, I believe Microsoft's original plan for Xbox One games was that physical copies would come with a code that licenses the game to your account, so you wouldn't need the disc in the drive at all. And they'd even grant you an allowance to share
the game between 10 family members. Something like that. But then people worried that there would be no way to resell the game to retailers, or buy used copies of the game. And so Microsoft abandoned that plan, and went back to the classic style of game
disc licensing.

Play Anywhere games and the digital copy. You are unable to play physical discs on the PC because it won't read it properly.

the Play Anywhere system only applies to digital games. if you pre-ordered a physical disc, then you will not receive any sort of code or license to download it on PC. if you purchase a digital version, then your account will have the license for this
game on both PC and Xbox.

digital version of the game. The physical version is not compatible between the systems. If you want to use a DVD you will need to buy one for the XBOX and one for PC.

If you own a physical copy for one system, you still need to buy another copy (be it physical or digital) to play it on the other system.
