Can I get a repair for money without warranty?

The older Xbox's came with a 20gb HD, and were not externally labeled, that is likely what you have.

As far as repair vs replace, check with MS on what thier warranty on repairs is, and compare it to any warranty you may have with the refurb. I would go with the better warranty.

If you go with a refurb, you can move your HD to the new one, as long as it isn't one of the new "Slim" models. Which means you can save money and get a referbished Xbox without a HD.

If your console is less than a year old, then you can send it back to Microsoft to get repaired for free, as it is still under warranty. If it's not under warranty any more, then you will be charged for the repair by Microsoft. You state that you would rather get it repaired without sending it back to Microsoft which would invalidate the warranty. In this case, no one on here can help you, as it is against the terms of the use of the forums to discuss self repair or 3rd party repair.

From what I can tell this is a known issue and if under warranty Microsoft will take it back and repair it. If you have voided the warranty or the time on said warranty has ran out, then there is no way to get a free repair. The only way to fix without
paying (if warranty has been voided) would be to increase the dead zones. Past that i cannot be of much help

Can still be repaired without warranty. Will just cost more.
