Why when I plug up my TV, it's says format not supported

I am happy to try and help you but please note that this is a community forum and is staffed by volunteers and gamers just like you - not Microsoft staff. We have no access to accounts, Microsoft systems or customer information and can only offer helpful advice.

Firstly, don't panic - your console is just set to a resolution that your old TV cannot deal with. Maybe your console is set to 4K but your older TV tops our at 1080p. You simply need to switch the console to low resolution mode and then manually reset your display settings to whatever is available for that TV.



If there's a disc in the console, eject it.

On the console, press and hold the Power button on the front of the console for 10 seconds to turn off the console.

Then press and hold the Power button and the Eject button until you hear a beep to turn on the console. You'll hear one beep right away and a second beep 10 seconds later. The power light will flash on before the second beep. Don’t let go until you hear the second beep or see the console start-up in low resolution mode (the Xbox start-up screen will appear slightly pixelated). Your console will now be in low-resolution mode (640 × 480), which any TV can deal with.


Now you will just need to set a new dispolay resolution based on what your old TV can handle: to change this setting, press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide. Go to Profile & system > Settings > General > TV & display options, and then select the resolution that you want from the options under Display.

Rgr warren I'm having the same problem. When I start up Netflix it goes straight to the input screen on my tv and it says format not supported and just a black screen. Then I can't get back to my Xbox and have to restart it with the power button. And Netflix
was working just fine last night. I tried everything idk why it's doing this when it was just fine

I am very confused. My Projector says it supports 4k HDR10 and so does my reciever. However, when I go to display settings 4k detail it says my TV setup doesn't support 4k 10-bit at 50hz, TV setup doesn't support 4k 10-bit at 60hz, TV setup doesn't support
Dobly Vision, TV setup doesn't support HDR10 for gaming, and TV setup doesn't support HDR10 for video capture.

But it supports HDR10 for video and 4k 10-bit at 24HZ as well as 4k UHD (60Hz). Yet when I call the companies that make my reciever and projector they say it does indeed support HDR10. Also when I look at the Signal output, it says the color depth is 8-bit
4:2:0, the people at Epson said the Xbox should be output 4:2:2. Anyone know what I need to do so my Xbox and project give me the support it is suppose to? The color format is also showing up as BT.709 But if I switch to my 4k fireTv it says the color format
is BT.2020 HDR. I also tried plugging my projector directly into the xbox, bypassing the reciever and still get the same data from the 4k details screen. Anyone have any ideas?

My issue was that. Xbox says they support everything basically and only problems caused are by the TV in which is an elements uhd4k with 8-10-36 bit even.. So my xbox says it will support certain formats whilst games cannot project in 4k or hdr10 whilst
my tv does support it.. i know my tv is not Sony or Samsung lol but again the problem is the lie xbox portrays whilst saying they support each and every format.. not the fact my tv is cheaper brand. F.Y.I Elements TV's are Amazing and well worth the price.

I too am having this issue. When I first plugged my box into our LG tv it worked just fine. I am using a monster HDMI cord, we switch from plugging the computer and the Xbox. They had been working fine for a few months. Now when I plug in the box, it says
invalid format, which is coming from the tv its self, NOT the box. After plugging the cord into the computer, it works fine. Switch right back to the box, nothing. Iv tried wiggling the cord, nothing, changing the tv input, nothing.
