You need payment method to NOT charge us?

Recently I tried to get a couple of avatar items from the store (because of one of your promotional emails) that happened to be FREE, and had a couple problems (one more of an annoyance) when trying to "buy" them, the first was just the bother of having
to confirm via text message for security reasons which I understand (no one wants phantom charges on your card for example), but it made no sense considering the items were FREE, but like I said... no big problem; the second one however was more than just
bothersome since it forcebly requested a payment method which first... was unnecesary (again the items in question were FREE), and in my case it made it imposible since I don't have a payment method registered (be it credit card or paypal account), nor do
I have plans to add one for the time being, so as a result I COULDN'T GET THE ITEMS even though they were FREE, and it even made it strange and a bit suspicious that the site/store requested payment methods in the first place.

Why can't we get FREE ITEMS and CONTENT from the store unless we give out a way to be charged? Why should anyone be forced to register payment options unless -of course- Microsoft needs to charge us?

Go to billing.Microsoft.com, pull up your account, remove you payment methods, then re-ad your payment methods.

Sorry, it is not possible to get a gold membership with microsoft points. You will need to add a payment method to your account and use that payment method to upgrade to gold status. Payment methods can be added here: commerce.microsoft.com

 

Even though the item is free, you're still making a purchase so the system needs to have a payment method to "charge". If you're using the 360 to purchase free content, you don't need a credit card or Paypal because it will recognize your Microsoft account
balance as a valid payment option. If you're using the One or xbox.com, the system doesn't see your Microsoft account balance as a valid payment option so you need a credit card or Paypal on file in order to make purchases.

 

Getting past the "Would you like a free cap?, but first empty your pocket and show me you carry money" thing, it still seems illogical considering that the items can't be found within the Avatar Store from a 360 (I can picture a new category BTW), and that
we HAVE TO BE LOGGED IN (xbox.com) to make the purchase, so maybe the system SHOULD SEE our Microsoft account balance as a payment option, not to mention that these types of items are usually of a promotional nature which is why they are FREE, and I believe
it's safe to assume it is NOT beneficial for these companies to make it harder for people to get them, not to mention that they are probably paying Microsoft to have the content in the store in the first place, only to impede us from indirectly helping both
companies benefit by promoting these brands.

You can search for avatar items via the marketplace on the Xbox 360

You have to look for the said game for.whicu the item is associated with like resident evil etc etc
