You get the free trial by creating a new account on the console. During the creation process it asks if you want to Join LIve. When you say yes it gives you all of the options for paying for gold. Choose "Upgrade Later" at the bottom and if the trial is
available to you, then it should give you the free trial Each console comes with 3 of these trials.

If you create a new profile, you can get a mouth free trial to gold and download the beta which ends on the 10th Oct, way before your gold trial ends. (this will work as long as you haven't used up your gold trials, I think you get 3)

You get offered the free trial when you create a new account on a new console. Each new console has the ability to offer you 3 free trials for 3 new accounts created on them.

You will not be offered a free trial if you create the account on Xbox.com.

One thing about the free trial, when you get offered it and accept it you will need to input a Paypal or Credit Card. Reason being is that once the trial is over the sub will renew to a standard 1 month sub. But this can easily be stopped after you get the
free trial by visitinbg Xbox.com, signing in with the account details and turning off Auto Renewal in the accounts section(Found under your gameertag in the top right of the screen).
