XES layoff question...

I'm not really sure what XES division is responsible for, but can someone shed some light. Do these layoffs have any affect on adding future entertainment apps? HBO Go, Showtime Anytime, 3rd party developers like PLEX, etc. I'm waiting for the XBOX to get
more apps.

What do you guys think?

I believe most of those layoffs (if not all) were in the phone division

Among the apps you mentioned, no, there should not be any change.

The MS studio that is being closed was creating original tv content, presumably exclusive to Xbox owners. Things like that soccer reality show, Every Street United, that aired during the World Cup. That upcoming documentary about the ill-fated Atari game,
E.T? At least they finished shooting it. I'd expect to see that premiere on Xbox, before being distributed elsewhere. At any rate - no more experimental series & films like those. I don't know what else they were working, aside from the Halo miniseries.

The apps from HBO, Showtime, etc, will continue to be supported by the companies that own them.

Because the apps are different depending on which part of the world you live in, you'll find they won't come in "waves", rather you'll find new ones appear as the developers release them. Similar to the games.

 

It's also confirmed that Quantum Break will be unaffected by the layoffs, and Signal to Noise (The Atari Documentary) and the Halo TV series will also release as intended. However, some of the cooler ideas have been squashed, much to my disappointment. As
much as I love gaming, I do like to take a break once in a while.

 

I think way too much thought was put into the XES closure situation. They were responsible for original entertainment on an XBTV app. Sort of like House of Cards, or OITNB on Netflix and Amazon. Any and all of the other viewing streaming apps are company
specific. HBO is responsible for the HBOGO, FX for FX app. And to date, nothing was released from XES as far as I know. (possibly the World cup program?), so it is not like they are "taking" anything away from us.
