    Been having problems for a long time with speed and stability with out internet connection. Over the last few months I've upgraded everything from my wifi hotspots to my router. After going through several comcast provided modems, a few weeks ago I finally
    broke down and purchased my own. Speeds are no longer 30mbs, but a blistering 180mbs. The downside is both of the xbox 360 consoles in the house can no longer connect to xbox live. They fail at connecting the internet and give an MTU error.

    I have spent several hours on the phone with support from Comcast, ****, Cisco, and XBox. Comcast blames the modem, because it isn't theirs, or they blame the router, because it isn't theirs. Most everyone else points to Comcast. I can hook my xbox up
    to the wifi hotspot on my phone and it works fine. It's not the xbox. **** says there's nothing configurable from the consumer side and the modem just passes through data to the isp. Cisco says that the router is working fine.

    I've adjusted every setting known to man. MTU size being the primary one. I've powercycled the modem, router, and xbox too many times to count. I tried plugging an xbox directly to the cable modem, taking the router completely out of the loop and still
    get DNS and MTU errors. I've searched on google for hours and hours and am just coming up with nothing. I'm at my wits end. We can't play half our games because we can't connect to the internet. We can't use netflix or plex.

    Does anyone have any ideas as to what it will take to get this fixed? Is there anything that I can tell a rep on the phone at comcast to try?

    I'm so close to just cancelling my comast service. I'm sick of all the finger pointing and lack of technical abilities from the reps on the phone at comcast. The lack of customer service is starting to really tick off the most patient man in the world
    here.

    xbox360--> cisco RV325 --> **** surfboard 6183 --> comcast

    MTU Error

    There's a known issue with Verizon and MTU, but that only started tonight (2/3/2012). One thing you might try is manual DNS under configure network. It usually solves MTU errors. Probably wouldn't be effective right now.

    have you tried to reset your network configuration?

    if that doesn't work.....I suggest logging into your router and changing the settings thru the

    and using the default login if you didn't already create your own which is:

    wow so that post was a fail....

    here we go again!

    for DNS and MTU errors i do suggests reseting the network thru your xbox with

    support.xbox.com/.../connection-error-solution

    also i would go to Arris' website and follow their instructions for reseting your surfboard 6183 modem

    arris.force.com/.../SB6183-Troubleshoot-Internet-Connection

    i also have a link for connecting your arris to comcast internet connection

    also you can log into your comcast router which i do a lot by using this link

    http://10.0.0.1

    and the default login is:

    admin

    password

    hopefully this is what you are looking for and if not let me know especially if you receive an error code!

    yeah, I've done all that ad-nauseum with the exception or resetting the modem back to factory default.. I'm willing to try, but confidence is at an all time low.

    Hey Razor,

    Let's try with a basic IP connectivity test (ping), along with a defined size for each sent ICMP echo, to determine if packet needs to be fragmented (when DF set).

    Start with your current setup (RV325 --> 6183 --> Comcast) and if the outcome shows nothing unusual, exclude the RV325 from your setup and connect your computer directly to the Arris Surfboard 6183.

    Windows: Open up a command prompt (press "Windowskey + R", then type "cmd" and press Enter).

 In the black window that opens, type: ping www.xbox.com -f -l 1364

    Mac:
    Select spotlight and type Terminal. in the Terminal window, type: ping -D -s 1364 www.xbox.com

    


    What to look for, or not what to look for, when you issue the previous stated command is: "packet needs to be fragmented but DF set".

    I'm also a bit curious to why you use the Cisco RV325. Are you using this device to create a tunnel (VPN) between your home and your corporate network?

    Post back with the result from this test.

    just a standard ssl vpn.. has nothing to do with the xbox tho... right now the vpn is disabled while I troubleshoot the issue.
