    I just last week, purchased an 8tb WD external drive as an upgrade to the 5tb WD I have, needed more space. I originally had the 5tb partitoned into 2 x 2½tb and formatted exFAT as I used to use a Android based media player which had issues with drives over
    4tb. None the less, that worked just fine on my XB1-X. So, I formatted my new 8tb also as exFAT, spent days organizing and transferring all of my flikz and muzik and pictures/home videos over from the 5tb HD. Everything working and visible on my WIN10 PC.
    But when I plugged it into my XB1-X - MANY folders show as EMPTY!!!???!!! Considering that some of these flikz, especially the pictures and home videos are irreplaceable, I about passed out thinking that the data was some how lost. Upon plugging it into my
    WIN10 machine again and seeing that everything was in fact still there AND working, I started scratching my head. So, as a test, I reformatted the empty 5tb to NTFS on 1 partition and moved 4.5tb of data to it. Guess what.... same issue. Everything is there
    and working on the PC but not on the XB1-X.

    Now, I am more than just your average PC savy fella but I have yet to figure out what the hell is causing this and let me tell you, there are forum entries up and down the internet coast going back as far as 2011 about this issue. My only conclusion is that
    the XB is not able to buffer all of the data after a certain point and thus just states that the folder is empty. The thing that disappoints me is that Micro$ has not made any comments about this (apparently) well known problem. As it is, I now have a brand
    new 8tb drive that I cannot use on my XB1-X. I wonder if PlayStation suffers this problem?

    The game files are locked behind a folder on the external HDD called Windows Apps. I cannot access it, or copy this folder. If I try and use the external hard drive as my default location for installing apps on my desktop, it says I have to delete all contents
    on the hard drive first. Unfortunately the links you gave havent helped :(

    I may have figured out the problem. Though I looked at the hard drive from Xbox storage GUI it showed the gamedvr folder but it was empty which was wrong and I knew it. Got me to thinking about putting it in my laptop and seeing if it was corrupt. It was and was able to fix it. It repaired and showed all the videos. I think using a file explorer from the xbox app store may have corrupted it. I deleted all the videos and decided to try it again and it seems to have fixed it. Its recording to external again.

    Hi,

    Do you still have your Xbox One and does your external hard drive still work on that console?

    I have successfully connected both my Seagate 'Game Drive' and my external SSD USB 3.0 drives to my Series S without any problems. All my installed games show up fine.

    The Series X/S supports the same external drives as the Xbox One/S/X support. If your drive isn't being detected it's probably become corrupted or has a hardware issue.
