Xbox X not support USB SSD?

So got my Xbox X today, totally happy, until i booted it and noticed my SSD (USB3.0) isn't recognized anymore. Tried both the back USB ports as the front one, none will see the drive (does gets power and gets a quick initialization).

Booted my Xbox (day one) back up, still works there.

Is that a feature that USB SSD's are not supported anymore, or just a bug atm?

    :)

I don't know what console to buy it on. I play xbox mainly so want it on here but PS4 has the option file which is a game changer imo.

If Xbox One X has usb support tho, I would rather get it on xbox and wait till my new X arrives. If it doesn't have it, ill be very disappointed!!

I don't think it's any legal reason, the current xbox just does not allow usb imports.

I would imagine the X will have usb support tho ill be very suprised if it doesn't considering the way it's going with Windows 10 ect so may just take the punt on xbox and hope for the best come November!

Xbox X not support USB SSD?

    Hi SinergyXL,

The One X uses USB drives the same way the One and the One S does. If you're not able to see your USB drive follow the steps in this link.

    Hope this helps!

Been having similar issues myself! It does recognise it now but only in the front USB port, neither of the rear ports will recognise it.

To add to the problems, mine just keeps radomly crashing when I get a few mins in to a game, any game, campaign or multiplayer, it just crashes back to the dashboard.

    Good start to these

    Xbox one X

All Xbox One X consoles contain a standard 2.5" mechanical hard drive that is not user replicable. There are no official models with an SSD. Any discussions regarding replacing the internal drive are strictly prohibited on these forums.

You can use an external SSD on a One X. This can be one you can buy ready to plug in with the built-in USB cable or you can buy a standard SATA III SSD and attach it to a SATA to USB adaptor or via drive enclosure connected via USB.

Due to the low I/O speed of the One X, caused by its rather slow CPU, you can't get the same speed as you would with an external USB SSD on the Series X|S consoles.

Thinking of picking up an SSD for Xbox Series S

Bear in mind, even faster SSD external storage only works for Xbox One and Xbox One X enhanced games. They won't work with Series X|S games. You can store these games on these drives, but you can't play them.

NVME is a waste of money as the USB 3.1 ports maximum bandwidth is 5Gb/s (or 500MB/s).

If you want an SSD for your Xbox One or Xbox One X enhanced games, then your best choice is a SATA SSD connected either via a SATA to USB 3.1 adaptor or an USB 3.1 external drive enclosure.

Series X not recognizing External SSD as USB 3.0

Thank you for contact us! I'm Anderson, an Independent Consultant and a Microsoft user like you.

    Good evening

Ensure that you are using the correct USB port on your Series X. Some consoles have multiple USB ports, but not all of them may support USB 3.0 speeds. Check your Series X's manual or support website to see which ports support USB 3.0 speeds.

Try connecting the SSD enclosure to a different USB port on your Series X. If the first port you tried did not work, it is possible that there is an issue with that specific port. Try a different one to see if it recognizes the SSD enclosure as USB 3.0.

Verify that the USB cable you are using is rated for USB 3.0 speeds. Some USB cables may not be rated for USB 3.0 speeds and can cause the device to not be recognized as USB 3.0. Ensure that the USB cable you are using is rated for USB 3.0 speeds and is in good condition.
