Xbox Wireless Adapter not working

I recently bought an Xbox Wireless Adapter so I could connect my headphones (Razer Nari Ultimate for Xbox) to my laptop. However, it appears that the adapter is not working. Whenever I use the Razer Nari Ultimate pairing utility or recovery tool for the dongle, they don't detect when the dongle is plugged in. The device manager, however, does detect the adapter.

Strangely, despite them not detecting the dongle, I was able to get it to connect to my headphones one time, which was the first time I tried to use it. That one time the dongle did work, I wasn't able to adjust the volume of the headphones; not through the laptop's volume slider nor the headphones' volume wheel.

I believe it is the adapter that is the problem, as it was never detected by the pairing utility nor the recovery tool, it doesn't fit nicely into the USB port on my laptop, the metallic part gets very hot whenever it is plugged in, and whenever I shake it I can hear something rattling inside.

I want to try diagnosing the problem rather than sending the dongle back and ordering a replacement one. I've already tried unplugging the dongle, restarting my laptop, and plugging it back in, to no avail.
