Xbox wireless adapter for windows 10 no longer working after using usb cable

I recently bought vanguard on PC so getting back into some gaming.

I connected my Xbox wireless adapter for windows 10 to use my Xbox Elite 1 controller.

It went flat so I plugged in the usb cable, now the dongle doesnt light up at all.

I've tried it multiple times on two different pcs, however on the second pc i tested with, it was plugged in via usb first to recharge before i tested the adapter.

This is the first time i've plugged it in months which leads me to believe an update has caused this possibly.

I have updated everything to the latest updates Windows 10 feature update 21H1

I have opened device manager, show hidden devices, removed the xbox wireless adapter for windows 10 (and selected delete software from this pc), then rebooted and the device isnt being recognised.

The dongle will not light or be detected with a single press of the button, or with a long sustained press of the button.

The controller works via USB cable, but has lost its wireless functionality.

I do have computers i can test with that it has never been plugged into before, unsure of their current windows versions.

I have noticed the whole new "GAMING" and xbox apps features are all new

Also device manager has an Xbox peripherals section:

Xbox One Elite Controller

I've deleted this from device manager, rebooted and tried the usb dongle again and it still wont light up

I have been very thorough with my troubleshooting, i work in IT so can do any advance troubleshooting suggestions anyone may have.

This was an expensive controller, and now its a corded paperweight, please help.

Summary: I fixed it by plugging USB cable into a controller and pc, win 10 recognized it, system restart was required and after that controller was working wirelessly also.

Longer description: I installed fresh windows 10, downloaded and installed all win updates, then I tried all these steps and at the end controller started working.

1) plugged wireless adapter into USB windows 10 recognized it but Xbox one controller won't connect (keep on blinking)

2) plugged wireless adapter into another USB port but Xbox one controller won't connect (keep on blinking)

3) plugged wireless adapter into another USB port started task manager removed Xbox one adapter, windows found it again but still noting (gamepad keep on blinking)

4) plugged wireless adapter into another USB port (front) started task manager removed Xbox one adapter and Xbox drivers, windows found it again installed it but still noting (gamepad keep on blinking)

5) FINALLY, I fixed it by plugging USB cable into a controller and pc, win 10 recognized it, system restart was required and after that controller was working wirelessly also.

Thanks but there was no revert firmware option.

And the issue is with the "xbox wireless adapter for windows 10", not the controller.

The adapter doesn't turn on when button is pressed and doesn't get auto-installed when inserted.

Only thing i can think of it just died, or some software issues with latest version of windows 10 and xbox apps causing issues ?

I have the answer it states at the xbox website “The Xbox Elite Wireless Controller is also compatible with PCs running Windows 7 or later versions. To connect the controller to a PC, use the included
USB cable or use the Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows (Windows 10 only).” hope this helps
