1. Xbox Video and .mkv Files - Help and Understanding

Hi Everyone,

Excuse my stupidity, I've searched google multiple times, but although I got some clarification I can't seem to find an exact answer to my question. Any help and wisdom would be appreciated.

So my Xbox One is a part of my network and can be seen by my PC. I know that through windows media player, by right click and 'sending to' on a windows media player compatible file, you can stream a video to the Xbox One.

However the part I don't understand is that .mkv files aren't compatible with windows media player, therefore I am unable to do use the method above with .mkv files, But .mkv files are compatible with Xbox Video, on both Windows 8.1 and Xbox One.

My question is there are way I can stream .mkv files from my PC to the Xbox One? Can this streaming of .mkv files be done through Xbox Video on PC? Because I couldn't appear to get it to work. I've added the .mkv files I wanted to watch to my collection
on Xbox Video on my PC, but I assume that this is a local collection and that's why Xbox Video on the Xbox One can't see these files.

Or Am I able to drop the .mkv files on USB and transfer them to the Xbox Once? I have yet to try this but I can do it, that seems to be the easier option.

I hope that makes sense. Again any help or wisdom would be appreciated. Thanks!

:)

Play you mkv files on your xbox video player, it works!

So I figured out a way to play mkv files from the video player. You will need to install the following apps on your PC

Required software:

the Haali Media Splitter
http://haali.su/mkv/MatroskaSplitter.exe
website
http://haali.su/mkv/

Window Media Center - I am using windows 8 Retail with WMC add-on.

Yes, you need windows media center in order for the xbox to play MKV files no way around this.

Installation:

1.Install windows Media Center

2.Install Haali Media Splitter - Accept defaults

3.Connect xbox to WMC as an Extender

4.Play a movie in WMC that is MKV via XBOX

5.Exit out of WMC

6.Go To video player on xbox

7.look for same file and play it! You will see the haali media splitter icon next to movie

8.That is it, you don't have to open WMC on your PC or xbox anymore.

I tried this on two Xboxes and it works. I am abke to play 720P MKV files from the video player, it plays the movies smooth and fast on a wired connection.

Good luck and let me know if this works for you.

Is it possible to Transcode MKV to MP4 on the XBOX ONE?

Hi,

The big one I've seen is Plex and there is a Plex app on the Xbox Store. I'm not well versed in these things, but there are quite a few video tutorials on YouTube about Plex and Xbox One.

I'm pretty sure you'll need something to work as a 'Media server' to put your videos on to share with your console. As I understand it, Plex can transcode MKV videos.
This is not what I want at all. I want an MKV file to be transcoded locally into an MP4 that is stored onto my Xbox one as a local file.

Xbox One and its codecs.
so as soon as I hear it will play m2ts files over a NAS
It is unlikely the Xbox One will support m2ts over a network share.
they cant stop you from running mkv files. its only a container, x360 could run
mkv.
To this day, the 360 cannot recognize files in a .mkv container. Transcoding from a PC is different than playback of the file on the 360.
the problem is like 99.99999% of mkv use h264 for their video codec which x360 did not support as ms
wanted to push their own video codec.
The 360 supports h.264. It has since a dashboard update in 2007.

Xbox One's Media Player App is complete crap

My MKVs work when they're on a USB stick. Run your mkv file through a program and find out what the video and audio codec is. Mine are MPEG2 for video and some kind of 2 channel stereo. If you're trying to play files with Dolby 7.1 I don't think it will
work.

Media Player error 0xc00d36c4 streaming MKV from PC

Maybe someone could at least confirm for me whether this is even a use-case that is expected to work?Is it expected that you can stream MKV video using the Media Player app on Xbox One from a Win8.1 PC media library?

I have subsequently tried to re-pro the issue on a fresh build of Win8.1 on a different PC on my home network, using the same MKV files, and same Media Streaming options. In this case Media Player app on XB1 does not even list the MKV files within this media
library. Maybe this is the default behaviour instead?

On the PC hosting the MKV files with which the Media Player app gives error 0xc00d36c4, I once had some third-party MKV codecs installed (CCCP) so that I could watch MKVs in Media Player 12 for Windows 8. Once MS added MKV support to the Video app in Win8.1
I uninstalled these third-party codecs. Could this be the only reason that the Media Player app on XB1 sees the MKV files in this media library, and it isn't even supposed to?
