Xbox USB HDD random HDD disconnections.

I had problems with HDD's disconnecting for years.

    I use 2 external HDD's. 1.TB + 2.TB.

Last year, one of my 1.TB USB HDD's (Western Digital) suddenly weren't detected by Xbox One anymore, and i lost 900 of games.

Then i changed to a 1.TB Seagate HDD which have worked for months without disconnecting now.

Today it suddenly lost connection for no reason. I reconnected and it worked again.

My 2.TB USB Seagate sometimes needs to be disconnected when i reboot Xbox One, because Xbox One refuses to boot when it's inserted.

After Xbox One boots, it re-connect and it works.

This HDD have also lost connection while Xbox One were on, but it's been awhile since last time.

I have tried other USB cables as i know Xbox One is highly sensitive for cables.

This have never been fixed in any firmware.

Brand of HDD or cable doesen't matter much. Seagate seem to work better than Western.

It's not a big problem as it works most of them time, but i'm surprised it never have been fixed in any update.

MS have atleast fixed a issue where USB HDD free space didn't up update until you reboot the console after uninstalling a game.

I doubt there is a solution as it doesen't look like HDD brand or cable brand matters much.

Does anyone know what causes these disconnections?

Like i said, not a big problem as it happened only like 15 times +/- in 2-3 years.

    :)

    Two Hard Drives One Dock?

I wonder because I know the Xbox One can support 2 HDDs at the same time, but I'm assuming that is plugged in individually through the USB 3.0 ports. But I'm curious if anyone knows if I connect two HDD's through one dock will it still recognize it as two HDD's? Ya know, just to save a usb spot possibly potentially maybe

    External hard drive choices

No, Portable Ext HDD's are powered by the console via USB. Normally 2.5" HDD's
Desktop USB HDD's will need a plug.

The Xbox will format it, so it can't be used for other things.

None of this helps. It's a firmware issue.

Either way, i found out i can connect a third USB drive to Xbox One. Xbox USB HDD random HDD disconnections. :)

I have too much games on Xbox One, so i run out of space frequently. Gonna add a third drive.

Yes, i know it can lose "connection" sometimes, i know that in advance.

Losing HDD is not that big of a problem, but losing all data on it is bigger.

Losing games on HDD is also the best way to clear up space. Xbox USB HDD random HDD disconnections. ;)

  6. Are these all USB 3.0 drives and have you tried any that have their own power source?

All is USB 3.0 drives with USB 3.0 cables.

All is USB powered 2.5" drives.

It could be power unstability or something in USB ports on Xbox One of course.

External powered 3.5" could probably work better.

External power on HDD could of course make the drives more stable. I could replace them with a external 4.TB later.

    Hello,

From what you have explained it sound like the Hard Drives is defective. I would contact Western Digital and see if your drives is still under warranty.

I have a Western Digital My Passport and it came with 5 Years warranty.

Also all of your save data is store on the cloud the only data you would loses is your Games and Apps.

    Hello!

Thank you, but i don't think they are defective since they work 100% most of the time, and there is no corrrupt data on them. I also re-formatted them on PC to be sure.

Also. I cleaned whole Xbox One last year and everything were gone except for game installations.

As you say, it re-downloads saves from any game from cloud first time you start a game after cleaning.

I already replaced one of the HDD's and swapped from Western to Seagate, but that didn't help.

Like they are now, they probably work over 2 months in a row before disconnecting.

I think i will replace both with a 4.TB 3.5" HDD with external PSU instead. Seagate or Western.

I use 10+ year old external Maxtor HDD's on my Xbox 360 and Wii U and that never had any problem. Both have external PSU.

Maxtor HDD's refuses to die no matter age. Xbox USB HDD random HDD disconnections. ;)

Maxtor, Hitachi and Quantum is the most reliable HDD's i ever used, and all of them is gone from the market.

Hitachi is now HGST branded, and is by far more reliable than Seagate and Western. They cost more, but error rate is almost none.

also think HGST only make internal drives, so you need to insert them in a USB casing for use on a console.
