XBOX updates eating up my data usage

I unfortunately do not have the option to have unlimited broadband as I don't live in the town and so don't have fibre etc, I have data mobile broadband and am restricted to a maximum of 50gb a month....However my sons xbox one is continually doing updates
for the games etc and using up more than the 50gb a month which is ridiculous. I do have my broadband account capped however I would like to know how I can either stop all these updates or be able to let him play using the discs only and not using the internet?
any advice would be much appreciated?

If you have automatic updates active you have to expect some data usage.

Spiking bandwidth usage

Ever since the Xbox One update on Nov. 12 the bandwidth usage on my console keeps spiking. It goes from zero or almost no usage to eating up half my bandwidth or more. It happens when I'm sitting at the dashboard and when I am playing games (and I mean
solo games like Fallout 4 or Witcher 3, not online ones). There shouldn't be any usage, but it just starts going at what seems like random times. It's getting kind of annoying because it keeps booting my brother from games he is playing online on his PC.
Is anyone else out there having this problem and is there some sort of solution to it?

Hi there,

The games shouldn't be updating that often, or be that large of an update every time.

Is your console in the Insiders program so you are downloading console updates regularly? That will use up a bit of data depending on which ring level you're in. To opt the console out, you can do that though the Insiders App on the console.

Does your son play a lot of online games, download a lot of games, watch a lot of video streams? There are a number of things than can chew up the data usage quickly if one isn't careful.

You can set the console to be offline to play games. Information on that can be found here: Using Xbox One Offline

If you are on a plan that regulates data usage, Netflix will eat that up super fast.

Data usage is going to vary from user to user, depending on the individuals use.

While data usage for initial setup would be minimal, the downloading of games can eat up data rather quickly. With many games being in the 50 GB range, some can be as high as 100+ GB each. Apps, web browsing, TV/Movie streaming etc. will all contribute to
total usage... it doesn't take long to add up.

One thing you may want to be careful of... keep an eye on your data usage. The X1 uses a lot, especially certain games (like Destiny fe). It can eat up data fast.

Yes it seems to eat data.i checked the data usage meter on my isp website a couple of days ago and my usage was about 350GB. I normally average about 160GB a month. Although i have downloaded a couple of games off the store
