Xbox update/freezing issue

hello, recently my mother was watching netflix for some hours and got a system update in the middle of her show. She said it wouldn't download and was giving an error. The next day I go to download the system update bad it restarts, only to ask for the update
again. Periodically, it will let me onto the dashboard. the first time I thought it fixed itself, and started playing a game. After ten minutes the game lagged and there would be spots on the screen where the pixels would get messed up. It eventually freezed.
I turned it back, and it asked for an update, again. And again. And again. Since then, ive never been able to spend more then 1 minute on the Xbox without it freezing, if it even lets me update.

I have the black Xbox 360 slim, it's about a year or two old. Its in a ventilated area. I've tried clearing the cache, removing the hard drive, still nothing. Please help. Do I have to send my Xbox in for repair?

I havent had any issued wit this update except for RE5 freezing on me a couple times thus far

Disconnect from xbox live and boot up your console. I had a similar issue and was unable to load the home screen. Unplugged my Xbox from the network and it booted normally. After booting the console normally you can insert the game, start playing and reconnect
to Xbox live.
