Xbox update DELETED our HARD DRIVE 02/21/2015

I downloaded the Xbox 360 update when prompted today & allowed it's install. Upon completion an error popped up stating not enough space on my hard drive. I went to settings & only the built-in hard drive was showing. My 250GB hard drive was no longer
listed. Instead there was an error message about it's formatting being unrecognizable. I never changed anything with my formatting. All I did before this mess started was download the update from Xbox.

It appears mine is not an isolated case from what I gather on your forums. Many other Xbox users are dealing w/ the same issue. I have already tried all the suggestions made to previous posters to clear caches, turn off & on, the console, & transfer files
to a stick drive. Nothing has worked.

Please help me resolve this matter as quickly as possible. Thank you kindly.

    Thank you kindly,

    :)

System update has ruined my Hard drive.

    Hi, it's January 2nd, 2015.

I downloaded today's update for the 360 and now have an unformatted hard drive.

    Like WTF.

Reformatted hard drive. That apparently worked.

downloaded first game I wanted to play. Destiny.

    tried it. Nope. No worky.

    deleted it.

    currently downloading again.

There's nothing you can really do. The last dashboard update was rolled out approximately two months ago, so, if you magically got an update and it corrupted your HDD, chances are that you, and your console have been banned. Try putting a USB stick in and
connecting to Xbox Live. I may be wrong though :s

  5. Not true Irixion. What usually happens is that the hard drive fails first causing it to be unable to read the last update. It then asks you for an update which it can't install properly because the drive is failing. This is usually what is happening when
people report problems like these. Unfortunately all that can be done is to format the hard drive but even then there is no guarantee that it won't happen again pretty soon. Hard drives fail (on consoles and PCs) and sometimes you're better off just buying
    a new one.

Just happened to me as well. Played last night. Signed out. Turned on and screen just froze at XBOX 360 screen. After several minutes there I got the "update required message." Then the message about an unformatted HDD appeared. This is a Halo Reach 360
that we've owned for several years. It's major chain-store bought and gently used.

I've unplugged it and will remove and then reinsert the HDD in hopes that it will recognize it. Seems this sort of thing has been happening to 360 users for a couple of years...right about the time that the Xbox One came out?

Aargh! Unplugged unit and removed hard drive. Reinserted, replugged and started up. Xbox came on with the glowing red eye of death this time. Nothing would revive it.

Pricing the 500gb hard drive now. See it for around $93. THAT'S CLOSE TO THE PRICE OF A USED 360 CONSOLE.

Considering that we have about 30 games for this console, and the Xbox One is not backwards compatible (sad face), I'll bite for a HDD. I don't think you can save very many games with the amount of cloud storage that MS gives for free. I'd be willing to
buy 250gb of cloud storage for a reasonable fee rather than to lose so much with failing hard drives and have to buy another in a couple of years. (Sounds kinda like a good strategy if you were a computer maker losing money. Sell cloud storage/sell hardware.
    Either way you increase revenues.)

Meanwhile I found a 32gb Sandisk Cruzer laying around and inserted. It formatted out and am now downloading the update that seemed to have been missing. Will look for a sale on the new 500gb hdd.

considering that MS makes these units and they fail after only a few years of use, I may opt to get 2 250gb drives for the price of the 500gb. That way only half game data will be lost at any one time.

I have had the same issue ,my Hard Drive is under 2 years old and it now keeps saying "unformated" I actually thought it was the heat sinc getting so hot it wrecked the HDD but it was right after the update/ Like I said my HDD is under 2 years old , I hadn't
even filled it up yet and now because I live in the country when I get a new ($130s later) I can't re-download all the games I did have because I am limited to 35gig data up/download so I lose all the games I had and being disabled makes affording a new Hard
Drive very hard ...putting all that aside why should I have to buy a new one when Xbox's/Microsoft's Update was the culprit. I would understand if it was something I did but we could do nothing except download the update or be booted out/off... I really can't
be buying a new hard drive every couple years. What am I supposed to do?!?!?!
