Xbox stuck loading after trying to check for a system update. [Solved]

I was trying to update a game that refused to update and saw that apparently games don't show their update sometimes if the console isn't updated, so I went into settings, found the system update section and pressed the button to update the system, but then
it went into a gray screen with the loading symbol in the middle and hasn't come out of it yet, and since it's system update related, I'm not sure if it's safe to turn the console off. It hasn't actually gotten to the update part yet, that's what it's loading.
I can't push any buttons on my controller apart from holding the xbox button which brings up the menu where you can turn off or restart the xbox, but the buttons are unselectable. So is it safe to turn off the console without it bricking or do I have to wait
for it to load which I don't think it will do?

Update: I turned it off and on but it immediately went to a loading screen again which may or may not be the same loading screen. I still can't do anything though. Is there anything I could do as the xbox turns on to boot it into a special debug mode or
something?

Answer: I held down the power button for probably around 10 seconds then let go and pushed it normally, causing it to do what it does when it restarts, which got me out of the loading loop.
