    Xbox Storage Missing After Update

After last nights update I got on this morning and was having trouble with one of my games. When I went in to try delete then redownload it the system kept saying installation stopped.

I went to make sure that my external drive was selected as the main drive and both internal and external are not showing. Games can run but I can't download. Anyone else have this same problem?

Powercycle didn't fix but will try a factory reset later

im trying to update my xbox through a cd with the newest update on it but it just says mixed media disk

Ahh... if your console is saying you need an update immediately after power-on, that means your local storage device (internal flash memory or HDD) is no longer working properly. Obtain a USB flash drive to be used as USB Memory Unit, configure it, then
try connecting to Live. See if it still wants the update.

This oddball "I MUST HAVE AN UPDATE!" behavior due to missing/damaged storage device started after the Fall, 2012 update.

Lego Jurassic World won't play after update

After experiencing this problem and going back to GameStop they told me to delete the update but I can't find it. Went to settings, system, storage, games and apps. It's not there. Am I missing something?

How much space do hidden op/system files take?

The 6GB that is missing, isn't actually missing. The 20GB hard drive is about 18GB when formatted. Out of that 18GB, 5GB is reserved for a hard drive cache, storage for game updates and original Xbox backwards compatibility. The Xbox 360 O.S itself is
    less than 500MB.

I've missed that your profile is missing from the storage device. I'm sorry that I've missed that part.

Could you verify if your profile is truly missing.

    1. Go to Settings, and then select System.
    2. Select Storage.
    3. Select All Devices.
    4. Select Gamer Profiles.

Try use a USB (configure to use with the Xbox 360) as an alternative storage device instead of your primary device. With your console powered off,

    safely remove the hard drive
and plug in the USB drive. Power on the Xbox. When prompted to install the system update, for
a previously unknown storage device, select yes/ok!

Try recover your profile from LIVE.

    Xbox storage missing?

If you have an Xbox Series X or Series S, it's important to note that the system reserves some of the internal storage space for the operating system and system files, which is why you might not see the full 364GB of storage available for games and apps. This reserved space can account for a significant portion of your total storage.

Additionally, other factors that can affect the available storage space include game updates, temporary files, and saved data. Here's what you can do to investigate and potentially free up some storage:

    1. Clear Cache: Clearing the cache on your Xbox can help remove temporary files that might be taking up space. Go to Settings > System > Storage > Clear local saved games. This will clear the cache but won't delete your game progress.
    2. Check for Game Updates: Game updates can be quite large. Make sure you have the latest updates installed for your games, and also check if there are any outdated or unnecessary game installations that can be removed.
    3. Manage Game Files: Some games allow you to selectively uninstall specific parts of the game (e.g., language packs, single-player, or multiplayer components). Check if your game has this feature and free up space by removing unnecessary components.
    4. Delete Unused Games and Apps: Go through your installed games and apps and delete any that you no longer use or need.
    5. Move Games to an External Drive: You can consider getting an external USB drive to expand your storage. The Xbox Series X/S allows you to store and run games from an external drive.
    6. Check for System Updates: Make sure your Xbox is running the latest system software updates. Sometimes, system updates can include optimizations and improvements that might free up some space.
    7. Factory Reset as a Last Resort: If none of the above steps work and you still can't account for the missing storage space, you can perform a factory reset on your Xbox. This should return your console to its default state, but it will also delete all your games and apps, so use this as a last resort.
After trying these steps, you should be able to better manage your storage and potentially free up some of the missing space. If you're still experiencing issues or are unable to account for the space, consider reaching out to Xbox Support for further assistance.
