Xbox stops responding to menu selections

Alpha ring. This happened the first time last night or the night before. I think I was playing a game and hit xbox button which brought up the menu and I could navigate it but hitting A didn't work at all. It did the button animation but nothing happened. Tried going home, launching other games/apps, etc nothing in the menu would respond. Tried holding xbox button and hit reset console same thing, there's the animation of it being hit but nothing happens, tried to report a problem, same deal nothing. The only thing I could do is hold the power button on the console to reset it.

Tonight happened again. Held power to reset it and on a fresh reboot it immediately happened again. Reset again and it started working.

Now I've been watching a DVD but when I pushed B to bring up the on screen controls again A does nothing but X works for selecting the play/pause button. Tried the xbox button and the menu doesn't work anymore. Again tried holding it to bring up power/ report problem and it comes up but does nothing except the animation. Then tried pushing other buttons and Y made it say collecting data and move to the report problem screen. That's as far as I got because I couldn't select anything with any buttons.

I'd like to report this from the console so I can send the data but it seems impossible to do because while the DVD or game can still be played, the OS is effectively completely frozen.

Quit function -- Select the app you want to have stop running, hit the "Start" button or "Menu" button as it is now known as and select "Quit".

Hello mate, I've got a Panasonic VT20 so hopefully the menu options should be fairly similar

Select the XBOX's HDMI channel and then goto Menu --> Sound --> HDMIx Input (x being the input you've selected)

Change that from Digital to Analogue, this will stop the TV using the HDMI source for sound.

So, the flickering I was having with my TV was due to a bad HDMI cable. Swapped it out and the flickering stopped. Xbox still thinks the TV can support HDR but that it's not turned on, but I still can't select that menu option. Oh well, at least the flickering
stopped!

Try performing a hard reset EXACTLY like this. Hold the power button on the console for 8 seconds or until the power shuts down completely.
Unplug the power cord from the back of the console for 5 minutes.
Plug the power cord back in and restart the console.

If that doesn't work try using a different controller to see if the problem persists.
