Xbox stereo headset. I can hear but my mic doesn’t work.

I had the standard Xbox chat headset. One day this stopped working. I purchased the xbox one stereo headset and adapter. This prompted to update my controller, which I have done. I can now hear my game/chat through the headset but it doesn’t seem
to register my mic. When I unplug my 3.5mm jack from the adapter, my friends can hear the corresponding static. This has been the same with both headsets and both of my controllers. The headset and mic work fine when the 3.5mm jack is plugged into my phone
for a call. I have tried all the troubleshooting guides I can find on the internet and don’t want to buy anymore hardware before I know the cause.

Hit the Guide button in the center of your controller>scroll over to the tab that has your Gamerpic>If your headset is plugged in you will see an "Audio" option above Settings on this tab.

Make sure you haven't accidentally turned off the Headset Mic in the audio mixer on your actual Xbox. (Shown at the top of the picture).

The mic that came with the Xbox one works. My adapter chat button makes the game volume higher. Is it suppose to be like that?

I tested the headset on my phone and the mic works. The only possibility what I can think of is that it is a software flaw. None of my other stereo headsets work now on the Xbox
