Xbox SS/SX, Dev mode, Emulation, and You

emulators are not allowed on Xbox except as part of official, commercial products like Rare Replay. if you are not actively developing software, which you are not, you're not allowed to use a dev mode. Using dev mode to run pirate software can lead to account and hardware bans.

I have just been able to initiate the game on my other account with my sx, i just cant get it to do the same on my ss so cant be what you say, at least in this case. I can play the game on both accounts on my sx but only on one account on my ss. Isnt it weird that l can do that?! Thanks for the response mate.

Apps that are not 'Retail' (i.e. not digitally signed by Microsoft) can only be run via the Xbox Dev Mode. I'm going to assume here you're referring to the popular emulator front end known as 'RetroArch'? As to if it's safe or not, I can't say. I've only used RetroArch on a PC.

What I can tell is that running any apps (self made or not) is not against any rules or anything like that. Indeed, dev mode was designed to test developed software on the Xbox in what is essentially a sandbox. When in Dev Mode you can only run apps designed for this mode. You'll need to go back to Retail mode to access everything else.

Emulation isn't illegal, but downloading ROMs of old games is a legal grey area. Discussions of such things (such as where to download ROMs) on the Xbox Live network could lead to an account suspension.

I regret to inform you, but it's not possible to run games you have installed in the Xbox retail mode. Please be aware the developer mode is intended to develop and test the apps or games you're creating. So, if you want to play Microsoft Flight Simulator after testing the app you're developing, you need to switch to the retail mode.

Additionally, and as a general recommendation, please note that running emulators on the Xbox dev mode is not allowed and your console can be banned for this reason. So, if you purchased the Dev mode just to run emulators, you may want to avoid doing so.

You were never allowed to do emulation outside of approved, licensed commercial products like Rare Replay., it has always been against the terms of service not only specifically to do emulation, but running any kind of unauthorized programs on your Xbox. Using things like Dev mode not to develop software is also specifically against the rules.

Doing so can lead to account and hardware bans.
