Xbox Silver can play online now?

Hey guys, just a big fan of the Xbox and halo series with a pretty big question:

So I was just wondering whether silver live memberships can now play online now without having to pay for a gold membership. Recently I've been seeing more and more of my friend playing online without a gold account and was wondering how they were able to
do this. Did Xbox recently change their online policies to allow free play for silver members or is this just a glitch is the system (insert Sombra memes here).

Don't get me wrong, i do like being a silver member for the free games from time to time, but it would be more helpful to making a financial decision based on whether or not i have to pay for online. I have been doing it for years now and was just curious.

however aside from that, keep up being awesome and salutations from Japan!

Xbox Live Confusion?

Xbox Live is free.

You can make a Gold account, or a Silver account.

The Gold account gives you access to access to play online, along with free monthly games and weekly deals. This has a fee.

The Silver account gives you access to Xbox Live and apps, but you just can't play online or get the free games. This is free.

Do you need Xbox Live to play Minecraft?

Yep. Silver is free. All you do is sign up with Xbox Live (either from your console or Xbox.com) fill in your details, gamertag etc. And then you are automatically Silver.

Gold memberships add online play, certain demos that are only available to Gold subscribers, and that's really it. If you want to play Minecraft with people online, then you need Gold, but if you want to play it by yourself or split-screen with somebody next to you, you can also do that on Silver.

Gold is still required to play online, but if someone is using a trial subscription they will be able to play online, but they will not have gold status.

Unless something changed xbox ones with multiple accounts can share gold. So I have an account v3 on my home xbox that can have gold access due to having gold on the one. Not sure how it works with backwards compatibility.

silver means you can play online if you're on an xbox one. the person who owns the console can share gold with up to 5 family members on their console!!!!!! all the silvers can play online any time they want!!!!!!!

Since you state your account "has Silver" meaning it doesn't have Xbox Live Gold. Then the only way your account can play online is if there's another account on the Xbox One console that has Xbox Live Gold and that profile is set as the Home Console.

The home console feature is available to each account. When you have an account set as the Home Console on your Xbox, then that account will share out it's games and subscription across that console.

You state you just bought an Xbox One S, so the only account that would be on there would be your account that you added and your account does not have Xbox Live Gold.

My gamer tag is the only one on the console, and it is set to my home Xbox under the only gamertag on the system. On the One S however, I had to log in with my brother's account and make it his home Xbox so that I can use live on my new Xbox one S and game
share with my brother. I tried playing on my gamer tag on my brother's Xbox one, that is set as my home Xbox, and it says I need to buy gold. But somehow on my original Xbox one, I can play online.
