Xbox Series X Wired Networking Issue - With Analysis

All, Not sure if others are seeing the same wired networking issue, however wanted to share my analysis of the issue I am having in efforts for it to get to the right person. Suspect it is an issue with the networking stack on the Xbox Series X (hoping it's correctable with a software update):

Hello. I’m an Xbox insider that tried to post this through the
Xbox report a problem however due to the nature of the problem, at the time I
need to report and send diagnostics/logs, the internet is down. It said it
would send when network will return but I’m not sure it did, so posting here.
Same issue since December and I go through the testing routine again after
every public system update to no success so far. I go to WiFi in between
testing so I have a usable system online (but want to run the system on wired
    Ethernet). Details below:

I have had a wired networking issue on my XBox Series X since I got it in December. I have tried different network cables, different network
switches, and different internet routers as well as many suggestions online
regarding network settings on Xbox. All other network devices work with same
cable and network equipment flawlessly. I tried static and dynamic IP, clearing
    mac, etc.
I found a way I can recreate the problem for me every time on wired ethernet:

    1) Setup a couple larger games to be downloaded. It usually happens before I
get 50GB downloaded (sometimes much less), however I usually queue 100GB to make sure I see the issue every time.

    2) Go to my games & apps>manage queue>queue

    3) Watch the download

    4) At some point it goes from downloading at 100s of mbps to 0 and stops (goes from high speed to 0/stopping quickly) at this point wired networking is crashed and either xbox needs to be rebooted or the network cable needs to be disconnected and reconnected (to bounce the network link). Once the transfer stops, all wired network connectivity for online gaming or downloading is offline, and in the settings/network section it shows Service info is unavailable (networking is unusable).

    5) After rebooting or bouncing the network link, the download resumes for a period of time, and then stops again (the same process above repeats 100% of the time)

Because this issue can be recreated every time, did a network capture (bidirectionally mirrored out traffic from the managed switch port the Xbox is connected to, over to my laptop running Wireshark). Got to see what is happing under the hood, which is what leads me to believe it's a network stack issue on the Xbox Series X. On the network wire, the communication flow is:

    1) Download is occurring as normal

    2) Download stops on Xbox as mentioned above. In packet capture, you can see the TCP crazyness starting (retransmissions, etc.)

    3) My network router (the default gateway for the network the Xbox is on) starts ARPing for the Xbox but the Xbox does not respond with an ARP reply.

    4) Xbox starts ARPing for the default gateway over and over continually (who has ....) and my router keeps responding properly to the Xbox (.... is at ....) with it's MAC address but the Xbox does not appear to be acknowledging it and keeps asking over and over and over.

The interesting thing here is when the Xbox has lost all wired network connectivity from the console GUI point of view, in the background it is continually ARPing and getting seemingly valid responses. Something appears to be wrong on the Xbox side from the data I have thus far.

After the above test to further validate, I put a unmanaged Linksys 5-port switch in line (right next to the Xbox) between the managed switch and the Xbox and connected a laptop to the 5-port switch along with the Xbox, and tested again. During and after the wired network connectivity loss the laptop maintained solid Internet connectivity (no ping loss and speedtest transfers to the Internet were a solid 700 to 900mbps down and 40mbps up, even after the Xbox networking went down.

I'm trying to get an idea if this specific issue is with my Xbox only, with a batch of Xbox hardware, or more widespread and if it's software correctable (and the Microsoft dev team would look at it). I'm trying to hold out having the Xbox replaced just yet as I feel I run the risk of getting another refurbished unit back with either the same problem or a different problem (along with the inconvenience of the return and re-setup of the replacement). Thanks in advance and appreciate any help in the matter. If the Microsoft Xbox Team is interested, I can directly send the network capture for analysis if you would like to reach out to me.

    :)

What games are you excited about in 2020 ?

I'm excited to see Series X stuff. Specifically I am excited to see the differences between Xbox One and Series X titles. I love a good old Digital Foundry analysis!

For this game you need to be online

After reading others people’s posts who are having the same issue, it seems this may be a wired networking issue. I unplugged the Ethernet and connected via wifi and it works fine. The wired connection issue with the series X is widespread and Microsoft needs to address this.

Xbox Series X randomly disconnects from network, nothing fixes it until I rename my device and restart.

    Hi Amelia_364,

Welcome to Microsoft Xbox Community Forum. I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing issues with your Xbox Series X randomly disconnecting from the network. I understand how frustrating this can be. This is not a known issue, and it is likely related to your network settings or router configuration but if deemed that this is already a hardware issue with the console, this can be covered by warranty.

Firstly, I would like to know if you're using a wired or wireless connection to connect your Xbox Series X to the network. If you're using a wireless connection, please try connecting your Xbox Series X to the network using a wired connection to see if the issue persists. This will help us determine if the issue is related to your wireless network.

If the issue persists, please try the following steps:

    1. Power cycle your Xbox Series X by holding down the power button on the console for 10 seconds until it turns off. Then unplug the power cable from the console and wait for 30 seconds before plugging it back in and turning on the console.

    2. Reset your network settings on your Xbox Series X by going to Settings > General > Network settings > Advanced settings > Alternate MAC address > Clear > Restart.

    3. Check your network connection on your Xbox Series X by going to Settings > Network settings > Test network connection. If you see any errors or warnings, try to resolve them by following the suggested solutions.

    4. If none of the above steps help, try to update your Xbox Series X's firmware by going to Settings > System > Updates & downloads > Console update available. Follow the instructions on the screen and wait for the update to complete. Then, restart your Xbox Series X and see if the network issue is resolved.

If issue persists, please check this page and follow the steps provided to troubleshoot the issue further: Troubleshoot your network connection speed | Xbox Support

I hope this helps you resolve the issue with your Xbox Series X. Let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

    Kind regards,

    Marrion
