It should be noted that your mileage may vary with this, as many games things like data throughput at the software level

Yes, it will work. However, even though the Samsung 870 is an SSD, you still won't be able to play Series X|S optimised games from it.

You can play Xbox One S and Xbox One X games though, and benefit from much faster loading speeds than you would running such games off a standard mechanical external hard drive.

    External Mechanical Hard Drive

I guess if you plug more than one into the Series X (which I assume you can do given it has multiple USB ports), then you could just then transfer between them presumably
My Series X has four drives. The internal SSD, a 1TB expansion card, a 2TB SATA SSD (in a USB enclosure) and a 2TB HDD.

ssd with a usb 3.1 rack on the series s

    Hi,

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by buying a 'rack'. Can you elaborate?

In terms of using an SATA to USB 3.1 SSD, yes you can use one but there is a cavate to using one. It can only be used to play backwards compatible Xbox One, 360 and original Xbox games. Series X|S optimised games must be run either from internal or the 1TB official expansion card. None Series X|S optimised games will load faster (generally a lot faster) than they would on old style USB mechanical drive though.

You can move or copy Serie X|S games to the USB SSD but you won't be able to run them on such a drive.

The best SSD's to use are standard SATA drives, anything faster is a waste as USB 3.1 maxes out at 500MB/s which is the maximum speed of a SATA SSD.

There are two ways to connect one of these drives. Either via a SATA to USB 3.1 adaptor or via drive enclosure. If you opt for the enclosure then you need to buy a 2.5" enclosure. Toolless are the easiest to use as you just place the drive in the enclosure, put the lid on and attach it to the console via the USB cable.

Any news on an official SSD expansion card of bigger size than 1tb?

They will eventually, that's pretty certain, but at the moment there would be a cost issue. In the meantime you could go the hybrid route and buy a SATA SSD and connect it to the console either via a SATA to USB adaptor or a 2.5" Drive enclosure.

I have a Series X with the 1TB expansion card and a 2TB SATA SSD. I put all the Series X and optimised games on the internal or expansion card and the rest run off my external SSD. My SSD is a Crucial MX500 and the loading times for Xbox One titles are excellent.

Don't bother with the faster (and more expensive) NVME drives that can be connected via USB you'll not be able to achieve the advertised speed on a console.
