Xbox series x requires me to insert disc even though its already installed on the unit

To answer your question when buying a physical copy the disc is used as a "licence key" essentially its proof that you own the game otherwise one person can buy the game and pass it along to an unlimited amount of people.

When you purchase a digital copy the licence key is in the way of a small download able file.

The disc simply acts as a key to a lock

If you installed via disc then you need said disk. Can you imagion if one disk could suppliy a hundred of your friends lol. If you want the luxury of swapping between games with needing disk, buy digital.

I'm having a similar problem at the moment. Only I have the series X physical disc, and I was even playing it a month ago... I updated the game today and it tells me I must purchase the game even though the disc is inserted, not impressed

The FAQ states the following:

• If you’re playing from disc on Xbox Series X|S, you’ll need to keep the disc inserted to play that game.
  

This implies if I bought a disc and installed on my xbox one, I would require the disc to play on my Series S. However the Series s is discless. I don't understand how a physical disc can state smart delivery for the Series S.

Unfortunately, there is no way to install disc-based content on an Xbox Series S, as it is an all-digital console. Even if you were to transfer disc-based content from another console via Network Transfer or by using an external storage unit, your console would still prompt you to insert its disc.
