  1. Xbox Series X - no support for 120hz on HDMI 2.0 TVs under 4k? (ie 1080p/1440p)

Hi there, quite a few people seem to be asking about this on Twitter, so thought I'd ask here.

I have a 2018 55" Q9FN which supports VRR and 120hz under HDMI 2.0. I can enable 120hz in the Series X settings at 1440p and under and, of course, it won't enable 4k 120hz. So my assumption is my TV supports this (in fact, the TV UI says at the dash that
it is running at 120hz at 1140p or 1080p if set to that).

However, in Halo CE and Ori, I can't seem to get support for 120hz at all.

Chosing the 4k/120 option does nothing under Ori outside of downscale the picture and remain at 59hz/60p (Freesync on/off).

Halo remains at 4k UHD at 59hz/60p (Freesync on/off) with NO option to play at 120hz even when the dash is set to 1440p/1080p 120hz. There is no option under the settings to allow for 120hz.

So... what's going on here? Is it something to do with the software implementation on the developers side? A function that CAN be added but hasn't - or does the Xbox generally not support 120hz gaming on displays under 4k?

Of course, not everyone has the latest LG/Samsung/Sony, so it'd be good to know if this is a bug or something else at play, like perhaps we're misunderstanding our TV's outputs.. Thanks in advance, this is an absolute mystery to a number of Series X owners
    currently.

    :)

It depends on what resolution your going to play at and the resolution of the tv,

if 4K, you need HDMI 2.1 to get 4K at 120hz refresh rate,

HDMI 2.0 will only allow 4K at 60hz.

if your at 1080p/1440p, HDMI 2.0 will be ok for 120hz refresh rate, however if it is 1080p/1440p i would recommend getting the Xbox Series S as that is aimed at 1080p/1440p.

    120hz

    for 120hz you need i think hdmi2.1.

besides connecting the s at 120hz is not going to magically let it run at 120fps, you will be lucky to get 40fps on most games. kills my eyes running so slow.
HDMI 2.1 is only needed if you plan to game at 4K for 120hz , on a 4K 144hz monitor, However there's no gaming monitors available at the moment, that yet has HDMI 2.1, the first HDMI 2.1 monitors that are likely to come in are around the same time as the
    Series X (Q4) launch or early 2021 (Q1),

1080p and some 1440p monitors can do 120hz over HDMI 1.4 if it's supported, but best ideally is HDMI 2.0 for 1440p for 120hz,

    HDMI 2.0 can do 1080p / 1440p at 120hz and 4K at 60hz,

    HDMI 2.1 can do 1080p / 1440p / 4K at 120hz.

For the Xbox Series X, it best to get a 4K TV or monitor that supports 120hz and has HDMI 2.1, to get the full potential out of the Series X.

Does Xbox automatically switch resolution and refresh rate?

    Xbox Series X. 144Htz at 1440p

Many thanks for your response but I'm afraid you are mistaken. HDMI 2.0 has always supported 1440p at 120hz. Even the article you sent says this.

"The HDMI 2.0 connector was previously featured on Xbox One X and Xbox One S, with bandwidth limitations locking content to 4K resolution at 60Hz, or 1440p at 120Hz"

So my question remains How do I get 1440p at 120Hz on the xbox series X with the huawei mateview gt34 monitor that is capable of supporing this?

So I can have a tv with a hdmi 2.0 and still play on it
Yes, but if your TV is 4K and you want to make full use of the Xbox Series X 120hz refresh rate at 4K, you'll need a 4K TV with HDMI 2.1,

But again it depends on what TV you have, is it 4K or 1080p? and what HDMI ports does it have ("HDMI 1.4, HDMI 2.0").
