Xbox Series X HDR very dark in screenshots and video capture

    Hi all,

I’m running Series X with an LG OLED HDR tv but since changing , all my screenshots and video captures are coming out a lot darker than before. I’ve calibrated and checked all the settings but it’s still doing it. The TV has a Game Optimiser mode on it. Am I missing something in my tv or Xbox settings? Or is this a known issue?

    :)

Thanks everyone. I think it might just be certain games (ie. Sea of Thieves) but will have a good look at it all on the weekend. Thanks for all the advice 👍🏻

    Thanks Mateus,

Yes the screenshots and video captures are dark when I share them to socials or download them to my phone as well.

    Hi,

Does this occur with screenshots and video captures from all games, and when did you start to experience this issue? This could be a brightness setting affecting a particular game.

Any recent changes to your setup? Are the game clips and screenshots installed to an external hard drive or directly to internal storage?

You mentioned that this error is on a LG HDR TV - to be more specific with troubleshooting, may I ask the exact model? I’m afraid you may need to reset your display settings (you don’t necessarily need to try a complete factory reset) on your console.

Adjust all display settings to see if there’s any difference, particularly the colour depth and colour space options under ‘video fidelity’.

I remember this was quite a common problem on Xbox One too (many reports regarding this in various forums - many threads on Reddit and here on the Xbox forum). From what I’ve found, the brightness in screenshots and captures was back to normal when being downloaded/viewed elsewhere such as the Xbox app on PC or sending it to a friend.

I believe HDR mode doesn’t work too well (even on Series X) with game clips for some reason, so I’d suggest turning this and other optimisations off (I understand this isn’t ideal, but as least it can be a temporary workaround until it’s fixed in an update).

Refer to this Reddit thread and this one:

Also, are you part of the Xbox Insider program?

    Hope this helps!

Hello, how are you? My name is Mateus. I'm an Independent Advisor and I'll be glad to help you today.

First, welcome to the Xbox community.

We appreciate your coming to the Xbox community. Have you tried viewing these files on another device? Maybe this is something regarding HDR calibration or Dolby Vision itself which is now available for gaming.

*Thank you in advance for contacting us.

I see, so I believe it might be a problem with the Xbox DVR, try changing the capture settings such as resolution.

Try disabling console HDR or Dolby vision also when taking screenshots, and check if screenshots and videos are still dark.

    - If the options above do not solve the problem, try the alternatives below.

Step 1. Press and hold the Xbox button on the console for at least 10 seconds to open the Power center.

Step 2. Then unplug the power supply from your console and wait for 3 minutes.

Step 3. Plug the power supply back into the Xbox console.

Step 4. Press the Xbox button on the console to turn it on again.

    - If this doesn't work, reset your console to factory defaults, follow the steps below.

Press the Xbox button to open the guide.

Select Profile & system > Settings > System > Console info.

    Select Reset console.

On the Reset your console? screen, you'll see three options:

    - Select the option to keep your games and apps so that they are not deleted, make sure you know your email and password as they will be removed from the console and you will need to add them again.
