Xbox Series X HDMI cable forcing 680 x 420 resolution.

Bit of a weird problem. Everything was working perfectly then I decided to test some Xbox 360 consoles I had recently picked up which apparently had faults. Instead of re wiring another HDMI cable, I disconnected it out of my Series X and plugged it into the 360 consoles (this is the cable that came with the Series X). First one was fine, the second one came up with a reduced resolution so I changed the settings on the console and it was Allgood. Same with the last one.

Then when I plugged the HDMI cable back into my Series X, the resolution was locked at 680 x 420 while still set to auto detect with no option to enable 4K or change it. I can force it to 1080 by unselecting the auto detect feature but it’s so weird considering it was working perfectly 5 minutes beforehand. I then tried using an old standard HDMI cable I‘ve had lying around for years and the Xbox went back to automatically displaying a perfect picture. Tried the original cable again and it went back to being locked at 680x420.

Am I missing something? Is there any reason my Series X HDMI cable now works perfectly with everything else except the actual console it was designed for?

Plz send help because I don’t really want to go buy an expensive replacement.

    :)

Hi there! This is Ronnie, an independent advisor.

Nice to meet you and I hope you are having a great day!

I understand you need help with your HDMI problem.

Try resetting the console with that same cable and see if it helps.

NOTE: This will remove the profiles on your console, make sure that you remember the email and password to your account.

No data or game saves will be lost doing this, everything is backed up to the cloud servers.

    1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide.

    2. Select Settings.

    3. Select System.

    4. Select Console info

    5. Select Reset console.

    6. Select Reset and keep my games & apps

This will also help sync the data on your console properly.

And what if I buy a cable will it work
The Xbox Series X will come with a HDMI 2.1 cable,

But whether you use a HDMI 2.1 cable or not, the HDMI port on the TV needs to be HDMI 2.1 to achieve the 120hz refresh rates at 4K.

using a HDMI 2.1 cable on a TV port with HDMI 2.0 will still only limit the Xbox Series X to 60hz refresh rates.

Xbox series X turn on. 480p not 4K

I haven't had this on my Series X (touch wood) in the 5 months I've owned it. However, my One X would, from time to time, show a really low resolution upon turning it on...usually resolved by unplugging the HDMI cable from the Xbox and plugging it in again.

    1X degrades cable picture

So are you saying you plugged your cable box into the HDMI passthrough on the One X?

If the cable box is defaulting to a lower resolution when connected into the Xbox One X's HDMI passthrough, you should be able to adjust the display output in the cable box's settings menu.
